Recently, EZ Trust AV reported the presence of java.byte.verify.exploit, as well as java.shinwow.m. EZ web site says that the first is not a virus, but my system can be exploited. I looked at my list of Windows updates, and the KB816093 update, which is supposed to take care of the verify.exploit, was installed on April 2003. Last week, I upgraded to XP PRO SP2 (a flawless install) but EZ still shows I have the verify.exploit and shinwow.m on my system. I ran "jview" at a command prompt, and do not have MS Virtual Machine loaded.

    1. Do I need VM installed? 2. Am I safe if VM is not installed? What's going on

    Hello fieldtech,

    1. Do I need VM installed?

The only reason that you would need Java, whether MS's or Sun's is to utilize web page features of sites that use it, no other reason.

    2. Am I safe if VM is not installed?

You're safer without it than with it.

EZ still shows I have the verify.exploit and shinwow.m on my system.

    Should give you a location.

Usually the verify.exploit lands in the TemporaryIinternetFolder. If you haven't done so, clean it out. One other action is to go into IE's Tools > internet options > advanced tab > and scroll down to Security > empty the TIF file on disconnect.

It may also be in the Sytem Restore files. Probably a good idea to disable System Restore and then renable it. That will delete the current and give you a new restore point. My Computer > properties > SR tab.

    Regards - Charles
