I've got spyware. I've run AdAware twice, Spybot two or three times, and Hijack this, but I'm still getting random ads and there are some questionable processes running in my system process window.

I've removed the obvious offenders from my registry with Hijack this, but I'm not sure what's safe to delete and what's not.

Here's the current log from Hijackthis:

    Running processes:

Ok, I ran housecall. It found a bunch of worms and Sandbox. I've deleted the files and continued to run Housecall until it no longer detected any viruses. Now, is there anything in my registry I should remove?

Problems now? Depends on how you define problems.

Did you look at the links Dave posted related to
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Dpi\dpi.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wnstscc.exe

I personally wouldn't put up with either one but expecially with wnstscc.exe.

Did you install this HOSTS file?

    O1 - Hosts: 12.129.205.209 search.netscape.com12.129.205.209 sitefinder.verisign.com
If not download this HOSTS File Reader, open and scan for HOSTS files. Delete this one and reset the default.

Scan again with HJT and place a check next to this and fix.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ncao] C:\Documents and Settings\Monkey\Application Data\urpo.exe

Then end task on the process in task manager, search the drive for and delete ALL copies of this file (urpo.exe). Make sure you have hidden files shown and search them also. Check the application data folder for any other suspiciously named files, particularly .exe's.

I recommend you also disable system restore, empty the Temp folders (C:\Windows\Temp, C:\Docs and Settings\(all)usernames\Local settings\temp), clear all temporary internet files and cookies, delete everything from the prefetch folder (C:\Windows\Prefetch) and finally empty the recycle bin. Then reboot, re-enable system restore.

I would also stop these processes from starting up. They will start manually when you use them.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AIM] C:\Program Files\AIM95\aim.exe -cnetwait.odl
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdaptecDirectCD] "C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe "
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] "C:\Program Files\Winamp3\winampa.exe "

Recommend fixing the messenger entry, end task on the process and uninstall, unless you use it. The other four can simply be unchecked in msconfig. Aim even has a place within it's options to disable from startup.

Removed yet more files you guys identified. I installed and ran the Hosts thing, and it spat this out:

    C:\I386\HOSTS
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS

I never ran across Delfin Media View, but I did find a number of unfamiliar programs in my Add/Remove programs window. PGate Basic is in there and when I click remove it opens a browser window and wants to install some sort of "uninstall" software, but I'm really wary of doing that. How do I get rid of it and make sure it stays gone?

There are some other programs in the Add/Remove window that look I don't recognize and want to get your opinion on:

    Internet Explorer Q831167
    Viewpoint Media Player

With the reader, highlight this one C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS and click use notepad. Copy and paste the contents so we can have a look.

    Use the PGate uninstaller.
This should go, in my opinion. Viewpoint Media Player Gets installed with AIM.
Not sure what this is without googling. Wex Tech Answer Works
Others are OK. Windows updates and security patches.
ActiveX settings should be OK at prompt, disable, disable, enable, enable.

    Lonny, Newt, anyone,

    The visible hosts IP resolves to this;

    Final results obtained from whois.arin.net.
    Results:
    AT&T WorldNet Services ATT (NET-12-0-0-0-1)
    12.0.0.0 - 12.255.255.255
    CERFnet ATTENS-LAX1-1 (NET-12-129-192-0-1)
    12.129.192.0 - 12.129.255.255

Does that look like Netscape search to you? Incidentally, that's one of the same incoming requests my firewall keeps blocking.

Here's the content of the Hosts file

    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost

If it were me, I would reset the default, or just edit that one. Take out these entries and save.

    12.129.205.209 search.netscape.com12.129.205.209 sitefinder.verisign.com

    127.0.0.1 www.f1organizer.com #REMOVED ADWARE URL
    127.0.0.1 www.netpalnow.com #REMOVED ADWARE URL
    127.0.0.1 www.addictivetechnologies.com #REMOVED ADWARE URL

Although there's nothing wrong with that one except in my opinion, the netscape entry. That 127.0.0.1 address effectively blocks your computer from those sites, which is probably a good thing. More extensive HOSTS files are available if you want to use one.

Also see Lonny's pinned thread in this forum "TonyKleins-so how did I get infected" for steps you can take to help protect against unwanted installs.

Once you get everything completed, reboot, surf a bit and post another log. It looks pretty good so far. How's it behaving? Before and after reboot.

    12.129.205.209 search.netscape.com 12.129.205.209 sitefinder.verisign.com

Now that one is interesting. Seems to show up on lots of PCs. As written (no space between search.netscape.com and 12.129.205.209) it simply means that any time you try to get to sitefinder.verisign.com you will be redirected to 12.129.205.209.

That one is a real sneak. It brings up a bogus 'The Site you are looking for " " is not available' message on a search page that is Copyright © 2004 IncrediFind.com and at least for some folks has done a successful browser homepage hijack.

I'd get rid of it although I can't see it doing much damage unless you try to get to sitefinder.verisign.com. BTW - it did not manage to hijack my home page.
