    Hi,

I need help! I downloaded a cleaner program to try to get my old machine working quicker, but i think i clicked a wrong button and deleted some important things that i didnt want to. When i go to switch my machine on now, i get the following messages...

"Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.

The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.

If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try uninstalling that application to replace the missing file.

    C:\WINDOWS.002\system\VMM32\ifsmgr.VXD

Press a key to continue... "

So i do then it tells the the same thing, except...

    "C:\WINDOWS.002\system\VMM32\ios.VXD "

    Then...

    "C:\WINDOWS.002\system\VMM32\IFSMGR.VXD "

    Then...

    "C:\WINDOWS.002\system\VMM32\IOS.VXD "

    Then...

    "Insufficient memory to initialise Windows.

Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, and restart your computer.

Press any key to continue... "

    Then it automatically shuts down.

Can you help me? Speak to me as you would a child, then I might understand (im a biologist, I dont get electronics!).

    Cheers all!!

Hi 107606, As you request, we will take things slowly - a step at a time ...
You have somehow lost some files (information) from your computer that
    prevents Windows starting.
    1) Do you have the CD from which you installed Windows operating system ?
    2) If not, do you have the files to re-install Windows, somewhere on your
hard drives ? They are usually in a Folder with a name like Win98.
We need to help you through the process of re-installing Windows, and
this info from you is essential.
    regards

I think it would be a good idea to take the PC to a shop near you and get
them to help you- it will cost a few $ but will be easier than us all
advising you what to do to correct the problems and you having problems
    understanding what we mean.
    regards
