I installed MCAfee Internet Security in my XP (probably didn't need it, but it sounded so cool.) It proceeded to firewall and disconnect my MSN service, MSN Explorer and Internet Explorer(my fault, I'm sure.) I had to close that MSN account out and start a new one and of course I have the MSN Explorer, but I also want Internet Explorer. I tried to download the new IE, but it said it detected a newer version already installed and it cancelled installation. (Oh, I also got frustrated and uninstalled the Internet Explorer on the Add/Uninstall thingie, hoping that would solve the detection problem, but, oh no, that didn't work either. What can I do now to get the new Internet Explorer?

    What OS are you running?

If XP, you can't remove IE6. What you did was remove references to it. To get it back, go into the "add/remove thingie" and click on "set program access and defaults ". Click on custom then the down arrow on the right. Check "use my current Browser ".

I, like you, have MSN. I use MSN explorer only to sign in, then use IE6 to surf. The way I use IE6 is clicking on Favorites entered in IE6. I've set up a shortcut to IE's FAV's in the quick launch tool bar. Doing that starts IE. Closing a site while in IE6, stops IE.

To use IE6 and not MSN explorer:

Start > programs > internet explorer.

To make that process available in the start menu , pin IE6 to the start menu by right clicking on IE6 and choosing "pin to start menu" which will list IE6 in the "short" start menu.

Firewalling should not have given you your symptoms unless you didn't give the Browsers access to the internet. All Firewalls have this feature.

I know nuttin from no how about Mcafee ( and do not care to either ).

But next time something like that happens minimize the existing windows to see if there is a Firewall window underneath asking about Permit or Deny.

I ran into this problem Just today when I uninstalled and re-installed AdAware.

I also ran into it the other night on my Wifes machine when I changed firewalls from Norton to Kerio.

The Permit or Deny screen was under the LS Links Golf Window. She could not connect ot me over then LAN until I found the hidden screen and told it to allow ( three times )

May not be your case but was mine.

    Hey BB,

"minimize the existing windows to see if there is a Firewall window underneath asking about Permit or Deny. "

Very good point! Happened to me a few times as well.
