Okay, I'm tired of beating my head against the wall on this one. Here's the scoop. About 3 weeks ago, I tried updating my version of iTunes. I prefer the clean method, so I downloaded the installer program (64 bit for my Win 7 system) and then removed iTunes from the Control Panel. When I went to install, I get the following message:

    unknown\components\DA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8\5C13C3F8A3C98AA4E8AF1792A0A75D33
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

On a side note, I've gotten similar messages about access before with other files. I have only one account on my system and I have full access/control of the system with my account. I'm not sure why I keep getting this.

So, I right click on the installer file and select "run as administrator ". No go. I get the same message.

Checking the Apple site, and Google, I decide to remove all Apple products and try again. Same results. I tried it all over again and tried installing just QuickTime. Same results. I tried installing just iTunes, same results. I checked Add/Remove again and removed all Apple products. I cleaned out the Temp folder and ran Windows Install Cleanup, 3 times just to make sure. Still I get the same results. For some reason, iTunes does not want back on my system. The previous version worked fine and I've never had problem doing this before. I even tried using the Apple Software Update program and it wouldn't install that way either.

Now, when I boot up my system, I get the message:

Apple Application Support was not found.
Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again.
    Error 1 (Windows error 2)

There is no Apple software that I can install without getting the error message. I tried searching for some type of uninstaller that would remove all traces of Apple, but I found nothing. I can I remove all traces of Apple products so that I can try installing things again? Or, is there another way to go about this? I just want to get the software back on my system so that my wife can use her iTunes again.

Any thoughts/suggestions? It can't be this tough to install software. Thanks in advance!

    Mike

    Mike,

Use RegSeeker and do a search for Apple and remove all items found. Repeat this for ITunes and remove all items found. Reboot and try your installation.

No luck. Things still won't install. Actually, it's a good thing I made a restore point before running RegSeeker. After running it and deleting all entries for Apple and iTunes, I couldn't connect to the Internet. I reset things to my restore point and now I'm back online, obviously.

    Any other thoughts?

Still looking for a solution on this. Any thoughts? Anyone else with Win 7 64-bit having problems installing iTunes on their system?

I'm still fighting with this. My latest attempt to install gives me a "denied permission" error to the following keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\21cca8258a4ded1129f7858d558d5939\f8d4d91c344d6f4f9c09785f90d9b37

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\3f9e7ea97a1aee54490637032025def9\e603eb826ad5c9f4db0bbd3a8c6cffdf

I set the permissions on the main key to allow full access to it and all subkeys, but the subkey permissions will not take and I can not get them changed. Can I safely delete these problem keys and try an install? I know the registry is a tricky thing, so I thought I better ask first.

    Hi, Mike. :)

I'm sorry. I know you're frustrated and I currently have no suggestions.

However, I think people should be aware of your parallel discussion at apple.com so people here don't offer duplicate suggestions.

Perhaps that discussion will give Windows BBS users ideas about other things you can try.

Mike, do you (or did you) have TomTom GPS software (i.e., "HomeRunner ") installed in your computer?

In your original post, you stated
I Googled 5C13C3F8A3C98AA4E8AF1792A0A75D33 (after I removed the space that the vBulletin BBS software automatically put into your original post) got only two results. :) I found an instance where a TomTom GPS software installation file apparently created a registry entry with that string.

    • McAfee SiteAdvisor's bot during a drive-by at tomtom.com, apparently automatically tested a "tomtomhome2winlatest.exe" file.

According to SiteAdvisor, the execution of that file included the following action.

My thoughts might be off in left field but TomTom GPS software *might* be related since your original post seems to implicate an "unknown" component with the string I boldfaced above.

Perhaps that specific error message you got when you "went to install" iTunes was a coincidence. If you have (or had) TomTom GPS "HomeRunner" software installed in your computer, perhaps your TomTom software mucked things up with your iTunes.

    Back to your original post...
I Googled DA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8 and got a couple thousand results, many which involve Apple. However, other popular vendors such as Adobe and Symantec also showed up in those search results.

Perhaps when you first uninstalled iTunes, it messed with your TomTom registry keys. On the other hand, perhaps at some point, your TomTom software messed with your Apple registry keys.

A few years ago I went through a very frustrating software issue with TomTom map software in my TomTom GPS unit and phone conversations with TomTom tech support. After several hours of frustration over a couple months, I ended up giving away the TomTom unit (after I got it working again) and I bought a Garmin unit.

I'm probably biased against TomTom, but the only two results I got when I Googled 5C13C3F8A3C98AA4E8AF1792A0A75D33 seems to support my bias. :)

HomeRunner may automatically load when Windows boots. Therefore, HomeRunner might be the culprit when you have seen "similar messages about access before with other files ".

I hope I did not add to your confusion/frustration. At least you know others are trying to help. ;)

I did a little Google searching on those long character strings and found a FEW results that appear might be related to your issue. Some involve Windows Vista instead of Windows 7 but the suggestions still might apply in your case.

If I did not have so much music, I would give up on iTunes. It, finally, finished installing the newest version after well over one hour!

    Westside,

I agree with you about iTunes. More of a pain then it's worth. I use Winamp instead but my wife still uses iTunes.

    Mailman,

I tried searching the string, but I must have included too much in my search. Thanks for the links. I will take a look at them. Strangely, I do have a TomTom and have the software installed. Funny if that ends up being the problem. I will look at the links you listed and see what they say. Maybe if I uninstall the TomTom software, I'll be able to get iTunes installed. I'll try to get to this tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

Sorry for the delay in getting to this guys. Work has been crazy and I'm too tired when I get home to work on it. Hopefully, I can get to it this weekend. I may try removing the Tom Tom software. I'll post as soon as I have some results.

    Mailman,

Finally, time to look through the links you posted. I tried a combination of a couple things and iTunes seems to work now. But not without another glitch. The link I used was this one. I'm sure I probably tried it before, but after turning my TomTom software off in MSCONFIG and downloading a new iTunes install program, iTunes installed. I'm not sure if it was the TomTom software, the registry change, or the new install (maybe iTunes finally fixed something), but it installed.

Once installed, I tried starting and received the following error message: The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occured. (13014) Ugh, not another error. Off to Google I went and found out that my iTunes folder was marked as "read only ". I removed that check mark and iTunes started with no problems. I closed iTunes and tried again, no problems starting the program. It was suggested that one of the subfolders was marked as read only, but after I checked all subfolders, it turned out to be the main iTunes folder.

I will run it for a couple days and see how things go. If everything is fixed, I will return and mark this thread as resolved.

Thanks to you, and all, for your suggestion! I am hoping my months long battle with iTunes is over. Maybe never to update again. :D

    Mike, that's GREAT news! :)

Thanks for following up to let us know what apparently worked for you.

    ...

By the way, when someone decides to disable startup programs and/or services, (s)he may use a startup manager (instead of MSCONFIG) such as one of the following:

I also have not been able to install iTunes 9.2 on my Sony laptop running windows 7 (64-bit). I've downloaded the 64-bit iTunes installer using 3 different browsers. When I try to install the program, I get the following messages: "This installer is intended for 32-bit versions of Windows iTunes. Please obtain the 64-bit installer from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows.html ". The next message is: "This iTunes installer is intended for 32-bit versions of Windows. Please download the 64-bit installer instead." The installation did not complete, altho the QuickTime Player did install and appears to work.
When I went to the Bonjour for Windows page on the Internet, it brought up "Bonjour Print Services for Windows" which I am not sure is the same thing. At any rate I downloaded and installed it, then tried installing iTunes again. I got the same messages as above.
Things I have tried to resolve this problem:
    1. Completely uninstalling anything Apple, using Add/remove programs in the control panel, as well as Revo Uninstaller (to clean up previous failed installations.)
    2. Emptied my Temp directory as much as possible (a few files could not be deleted as they were in use.)
    3. Did a Selective Startup.
    4. Tried to install iTunes into C:/Program Files/iTunes rather than C:/Program Files (x86)/iTunes.
    5. Tried to install iTunes running as Administrator (altho as the only one using this computer I already am the admin.)
    6. Installed the latest Windows Updates.
    7. Applied suggestions in 2 Apple Support documents: "Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime for Windows" (doc ht1926) and "Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7" (doc ht1923).

Fortunately, I still have the old version of iTunes on my slow old computer running Windows XP, so I can still hear some music while fighting this problem. I would appreciate any advice.

    Hi Gary,

Unfortunately, no suggestions here. I will say that the administrators on this site will want you to start a new thread. So, if you can copy and paste your post to a new thread, you may get some more help. Otherwise, members will see this thread is marked "resolved" and will skip pass it. If I think of anything in the meantime, I'll let you know.
