Still in the process of repairing this machine (see previous dem45133), but I received a warning about using Norton's ISS 2005 and Netscape 7.2. I came across a thread that also commented about this problem too.

This IS NOT GOOD!.... as that THAT WAS MY PLAN after all the troubles I had getting McAfee ISS v6 to work and their lack of support.

I do want all emails and attachements scanned upon receipt from my ISP. My plan was to use only the Virus Scanner and the Firewall portions... (and maybe something for the web bugs). But now I see that that may not be possible? I did plan on using Netscape-Mail as I have for many-many years.

What is the problem here with NS mail and Norton and how can I alleviate it... or can I?

I had planned also to let NS handle the cookies, popups and spam (not Norton). Maybe I need to use an older NS that has these features but doesn't have the Norton-NS Mail issue?

    Thanks,
    Dave

You will be ok if you don't use Norton to scan your mail.
Netscape has all its e-mail in a continuous UNIX-style file, called Inbox. This is matched, on the hard drive, by the header file, i.e. Inbox.msf.
You should be able to use Norton to scan, but it will need to send with its own SMTP. As for Virus scanning, under normal conditions Norton will scan the header file, and if it finds anything objectionable, it will quarantine or worse the entire Inbox. Is there a solution? Ys and No. Yes, if you set an exception to the Inbox.msf file, but No, it will not scan the mail.
McAfee figured out this long ago. You are on your own about what you do with your mail, but, if kept updated it will stop you from downloading attachments which should not be opened in first place.
So, having javascript disabled, which is default, not opening attatachments without knowing what they are, keeping the virus definitions up to date, and disabling, the totally useless next message preview, will assure that you are ok. I have never gotten into any problem, this way, but when I used Norton the first time, five years ago, with default conditions, and the old Netscape4.7, I lost the entire Inbox.
You will be in the same boat with 4.x. To me, Norton AV and Netscape or Mozillas of any kind are like fire and water, if Norton is allowed to work under default conditions. I would be in the same boat as I was five years ago.
Use it, it is very good, but don't let it scan Netscape mail.
