Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum and like a lot of men, I don't like to ask for directions :D. I am usually pretty good with computers, but I've come across a few problems that are getting the better of me. I use Sophos, which doesn't seem to want to help me with the issues I'm having:

    Virus/Spyware Troj/Virtum-Gen
    Virus/Spyware Mal/Emogen-M
    Suspicious File Sus/Behav1009

I've tried removing the viruses several times, but they either can't be fixed or they come back. Once upon a time, I tried using third-party programs to fix the problems, with no success and probably more issues than I had initially. Anyway, the problems with my laptop are becoming significant, and the laptop gets hot and starts making loud grinding noises as if it is working ultra-hard at nothing in particular. This customarily starts happening a few minutes after I boot up.

So, I'd really appreciate your help. Please give me a hand here :D

    Welcome to WindowsBBS tednaciousd :)

Download ComboFix by sUBs from here, saving the file to your desktop.

    • Close all open programs and windows
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • It may reboot your computer and resume running when you logon. Wait for it to complete. When finished, it will open a log for you. Post that log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Looks pretty good, Ted. Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries, close all other windows then click Fix Checked.

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DD45143B-4352-4D07-BA0A-103AEC882C90} - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\mcdabs.dll (file missing)

Close HijackThis. Click Start>Run and type ComboFix /u then hit enter. This will uninstall ComboFix and remove the files it has in quarantine.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Check the boxes to the left of:

      • Windows Temp
      • Current User Temp
      • All Users Temp
      • Temporary Internet Files
      • Prefetch
      • Java Cache
      • Recycle bin

    • The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
    • Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK then exit.
    Reboot

Now lets see if we've missed anything. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      • Select My Computer
    • This will program will start and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.

Post the Kaspersky log and one more fresh HijackThis log. Let me know how the computer is performing and if there's anything else that needs to be addressed.

Thanks again Dave; it looks like Kapersky found the virus. It found 1 virus with 2 infected objects. Additionally, I have 3 things currently in quarantine with Sophos (what I initially listed), for what that is worth. Here is the Kapersky log, followed by the fresh HijackThis. My system does not seem to be running much better. Thanks as always- Ted

This is what the log said:
    "
    xfplkxpw.exe deleted
    "

Thanks again for everything, I really appreciate your time and help!! Just to keep you posted, before taking this action I noticed a couple improvements in my system. (1) My keyboard volume control functionality returned. (2) Itunes asked my firewall for permission, which I denied. Hopefully, we can knock this bug out of here for good!! :)

    1. There was an invalid path for sideact
    2. In my tray there is a new icon that looks like a monitor which says "view newly discovered UPnP devices." When I click on it, it adds Linksys WRT150N to my network places. When I click on this icon within my network places, it says "cannot find http://192.168.1.1:5431/index.asp" and opens a blank IE window.
    3. I think my laptop still seems to be making some unusual noise, as if it is collecting data for the virus to send to a website. After looking into the particular virus I had, it seems that it collects data about MP3s or WMAs and sends them out, which is maybe why my ITunes asked for firewall permission?
    4. There is a new home page for my mozilla FF.

Other than that, I cannot really tell anything different.

    Thanks again!!

Fixing the following entry with HijackThis will take care of the invalid path message for SideAct.

    O4 - Global Startup: SideACT!.lnk = C:\Program Files\ACT\SideACT.exe

However, if it's an app you use, you should check for to see that SideACT.exe is still present. Re-install if necessay.

This should be the entry for the monitor in the tray.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dell Wireless Manager UI] C:\WINDOWS\system32\WLTRAY

I'm guessing you have a Linksys WRT150N router? The address associated with the Network Places link throws me. I believe it's intended to point to the router control panel, but if not mistaken that should be http://192.168.1.1
Check the properties on the wireless connection in Network Connections and verify they are correct. You should also be able to change the properties of the link in Network Places, or even delete it if you want.

Next entry should be responsible for iTunes requesting access, which is normal behavior.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe "

Mozilla homepage was probably changed as a result of running ComboFix.

I don't see anything in your logs to suggest malware type behavior. What kind of noise is it making? Is it just during startup or does it continue if you leave the computer sit untouched for a while?

It continues all the time, like a grumbling, clicking, vibrating kinda noise, and seems to intensify when I close the laptop or leave it on for an extended period of time. I suppose that because my laptop also gets pretty hot, that it could might be a problem with the fan?

Also, Sophos still has 2 quarantined issues:

    Virus/Spyware Mal/Emogen-M located in C:\Documents and Settings\Ted\Desktop\VundoFix.exe

It says it is partially detected and requires a full computer scan to detect all its components. I have tried this in the past with no resolution so I have kept it quarantined, but I assume that if Sophos does not know the components of the virus, then it also does not have the ability to quarantine them. Could this be the problem?

Suspicious File Sus/Behav-1009 located in Memory

I have the option to authorize this suspicious file, but I'm not sure if I should. I have had a couple recent issues where the computer will crash and claim that it is out of virtual memory.

does any of this info help? thanks, ted

Mal/Emogen is a behavioral detection, meaning it is based on behavioral patterns it detects inside of a file only. It so happens that the file it has tagged is a tool written by a fellow malware fighter to aid in the removal of the Vundo family of infections.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Ted\Desktop\VundoFix.exe

It could be considered a false positive because we know the file to be safe, though it is not simply because the detection is not based on anything but behavior patterns. The tool is for a specific infection, and it is updated often, so it should be deleted anyway.

What is the other quarantined item?

It may well be that your fan(s) is getting dust buildup, as well as the processor's heatsink. Are you mechanically inclined, enough to open things up to do some housecleaning with compressed air and/or a small bristle brush? There are generally pretty good step-by-step instructions for the doing the deed available on the manufacturer's website.

    Dave,

I am not averse to opening up the laptop, but I know that I'm still having virus issues. I just ran another Kapersky scan and it came up with the infected files that Sophos routinely alerts me about. Sophos usually has 4 pop-ups when I open up my laptop after having it closed for a period of time, warning me that the DLL files in this RP825 folder (i thought it was actually RP890 but maybe I'm wrong) contain the virus Virtum-Gen. It appears that Kapersky calls it Trojan.Win32.Agent.ny. Anyway, it is what we tried to get rid of before. If I dont need this folder, it would be good to get rid of the whole thing, because I believe there may be up to 20 infected files in it... Thanks so much for your help, -Ted

That is an infected System Restore point. I wanted to be sure evreything else was cleaned and working properly before clearing those, so if you're satisfied that the computer is working properly, clear the System Restore points.

Clear past system restore points and create a new one.
Right click My Computer and select Properties. On the System Restore tab, check the box to turn System Restore off. Click Apply. Now, uncheck the box and click Apply. Click OK, then OK to close the System Properties dialog.

Verify a new restore point was created.
    Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
Select 'Restore my computer to an earlier time', then click next.
You should have a newly created System Checkpoint available. If so, click Cancel. If not, click Back and select 'Create a restore point' then click Next. Give the restore point a name and click next.
