Does anyone know if Windows XP is based on Unix? Or if it isn't, what is it based on?

    Thanks,

    John

    Based on NT.

    You have now:
NT3.x (if you are very old)
    NT4 (NT4)
    NT5 (Win2K)
NT6 (XP) - at least I think this is correct. Only got NT4/2K where I am now so can't check. I do know that some utilities that do fine with NT4/5 won't do at all with XP running FAT or NTFS.

Was NT originally derived from Unix? I don't think so. NT was a GYI OS from the get-go. Some features in common but that is true with every OS I've seen that is designed to run networked from Unix to BTOS, VMS, etc. And so many of those great Unix utilities are not available for NT even now. :(
