Is Windows designed to reboot after a serious error?

Two times now, in the past week, when I go to open a certain program, Windows just reboots itself immediately. No shut down procedure, no closing of programs, it just reboots as if I were to unplug the power source and plug it back in. After loading Windows after these forced reboots, I get the message that Windows has recovered from a serious error.

Is Windows designed to do this as part of the programming, or is the program somehow forcing Windows to reboot itself?

The program this seems to happen with is a game I downloaded. Now, before you start, it was a legally downloaded game that I bought, because my local store didn't have it and I wasn't going to wait for them to get any shipments.

Yes Windows is designed to do this...

You can turn off the function in Control Panel->System Icon->Advanced tab->Startup and Recovery Settings button. Uncheck Auto Restart.

** Note that instead of a reboot, you'll probably get a BSOD. But those have stop code numbers that you can search on for solutions.

If you would like to stop the above behavior, change the following default setting ... Start - Control Panel - System - Advance tab - see "Start up and Recovery" box, click on Settings presents another dialog screen. On this screen find the phrase Automatic restart and remove the tick.
My first guess would be incompatible drivers for graphics card. Games are very demanding to use the latest and greatest. Find make and model for system graphics card and check for new / current drivers. Also may want to check a game forum which supports game and check for graphic settings for game. May also find useful information on company site who produce the game.

    Thanks for the responses.

I'll keep the setting turned on, I was just wondering if it was something Windows did, or something forcing Windows to do.

As for the stop code, the dialogue that appears when Windows reboots has the stop codes in it. If I click to see what the error log contains, and then the technical information, it gives me the stop codes.

About the graphics driver, my driver is up-to-date. It's checked by Windows Update and this program called GameShadow. Both of them said it was the latest, but to double-check, I went to the website of the company, and turns out the driver I have is the latest driver.

Maybe the game isn't a well programmed one, or there's a bug in it that gets activated every so often.
