Is Velocity Install Worth the Trouble?

I just came across the SP3, Velocity, PowerShell combo install. I just get the hibbie-jibbies about those kinds of installs. Can someone here tell me first if the benefit is worth the trouble, and if so, a VERY, VERY, understandable step-by-step install. I tried to make hay of the instructions that come with the Velocity download, but I think I pointed to the wrong path. I dunno, that's why I'm posting this. I'm only fairly dangerous with these kinds of installs.
