I am connected to a DSL and running Win98 and things are working just fine. I found a Win98SE upgrade CD in a stack of old CD's. Would there be any benefit for me to use the SE upgrade? Would it enhance anything. I am not sure of what the difference is between 98 and 98SE. Oh, sometimes I have to connect to the internet via dial-up. If that makes any difference.

There is a world of difference between 98 and 98SE. It would enhance a few things.

    Be quick about it!

My understanding from other threads on Windows BBS, is that support for Win98 ends in january 2004.

I have one system on Win98 First Edition.

When is the end-of-support date for Second Edition?

I.e., is it time to move to Win98-SE or to ditch Windows altogether and move this weak, old, but perfectly functioning system to a lightweight Linux?

According to this M$ webpage there is no difference between 98FE and 98SE.

    I wouldn´t upgrade to a non supported OS ...... ......

That is so far wrong that it is pitifull. and makes me cry !

SE contains ALL OF THE updates, patches and other stuff that FE DID NOT HAVE.

Also SE is 2000 compatable ( I think that is what I want ) FE IS NOT. ( at least not without the patch )

Over all SE is by far SUPERIOUR to FE.

And I can honestly compare as I had both.

But it is true that supposrt for SE may be lacking soon.

    BillyBob,
    that wasn´t the issue!

What that webpage says is that 98FE and 98SE reaches end of support at the same time - no difference in that respect.

OK. It may well be the way read it.

The way you wrote it ( or I read it ) I took it to mean that SE was no better FE OS wise.

But I will say that anyone who does not have SE already should think about going to XP because of support being dropped soon.

If I did not already have SE I would not bother with it now.

    BillyBob,
no need to argue about that!

However, if You had clicked the "this" link in my post, then it would have become obvious what it was all about.

Have You finally gotten out of the "fight XP with all means" mode ...... ;) ...... ?

    NOPE :p

XP ain't no better than 98SE. ( not for my use anyway ) Just takes up more disk space to do the same job.

Just because I got it does not mean that I like any better than SE.

Plus half ( or more ) of the time lately I find my 98SE HD plugged in more than the XP HD.

And I do need to plug it in once in awhile anyway to keep AV & things updated. Then I forget to switch again.

But again. If you do not already have SE it is rather late in the day to install it.

Thanks Christer, BillyBob, Filippo and markp62! I think I'll go and use the upgrade and see how it works.
