Is therre an alternative?

I am a nursing home resident who is using a computer given to me by a friend. It has a 266-mhz processor and a 32 mb or ram. I had Spybot 1.3 and noticed it scanned extremely slow. Is there a freeware alternative I can use on this system? What about using just a firewall?

You can up the scan priority in SpyBot's settings, see how that goes. This can be done on SSD's advanced mode (click on mode next to file in upper left corner) and then settings toward the bottom in left panel, then settings again in settings page and then scroll down to scan priority.

Have you used Ad-Aware? Its faster. http://www.windowsbbs.com/links.php

Are you using a Firewall? SSD and AAW DO NOT replace a firewall. If not, get one ASAP.

EDIT: Should also have written that a Firewall does not replace malware scanners. Also look at browser security:
