I would like to know if there is some way to check to see if email I send has been received (not necessarily read) with out resorting to a return receipt. I tried a search, but this is a difficult subject to key word. I use Netscape 7.2, but I am not sure that is relevant to this request.

Yes and no. Basically if you get it bounced back to you as undeliverable it was not recieved (or they used an email bouncer program to make you think so).
    If
You can go to edit / mail and newsgroup account settings/ return reciepts
Then when you check the when sending request a return reciept.
Of course they can always refuse to send it.

If you have a web server , like most spammers do you could embed a call for 1x1 (therefore invisible) pixel gif with a unique numerical identifier. Then when the mail is opened, the gif is requested from the server and you can just check the server logs to see which were requested and when, compare that to a database of which gif number corresponds to which email address.
Spammers do this all the time, normally having about a million gifs on a server so they can see who opens their spam and then sell the corresponding email to other spammers. This is why i say disable the preview pane so that it does not call for the gif when you select the spam to delete it.

    Pete,
I usually, remove Spam, but, at times I want to know what is going on. I highlight the header, and select View|View Message source. Is it safe, or do they get an input if this is done.

    Maybe this'll doit

I use a little thingy called Popup Tray (Free). It just sits in the taskbar next to the time display. I have mineset to check email every ten minutes. It comes up with a sound and a small window on lower right displaying what's being held on the server.

You can view, delete, mark as spam and delete, etc. without the need for downloading into your computer.

    Check it out at: http://www.poptray.org/
    HTH,
    Bob :)

Yes, in that case you are seeing the source, not opening the page and displaying it as html which makes the call run.
