Is there any decent menu software to replace the desktop?

My friend is a technician at a school for the ICT system. Is anyone aware of any software that allows the desktop to be removed yet a mandatory program added which brings up a menu defined by the technician for the programs they need?
    Thanks in advance.

Simplistically, you can accomplish this with the use of folders and shortcuts.

Create a folder for the technician, and then inside of it create all of the shortcuts that he desires, and name them as you wish.

Then, from the desktop, they would open the folder, and the contents of the folder would then be displayed.

You could probably add a shortcut to the folder, in the Startup folder, which would cause this new folder to automatically open at boot time.

    Hello,

I believe that all you need is this tinny utility (Desktop.exe) which let you hide/unhide the desktop icons. You can download it from here. It's just 9kb to download and you'll find also a "Readme" text (how-to.txt), suggesting how to use it. It's nothing to install, just to use it to toggle hide/unhide desktop. WhitPhil's suggestion can be applied.

    regards,

    Stefan

WhitPhil may be referring to something like the 2nd picture
    Here

Several folders containing related itiems. And all done right from the Desktop. And activated right from START.

    No need for hiding/un-hiding anything.
