Hi, I was wondering if XP has the same kind of place that shows all the programs that load on start-up? Can I uncheck them so they won't load like I did in Win98?
    Thank You,,
    Paul

Yes, it does and you can. Type msconfig in the Run field and press enter. You'll see the Startup tab among other nice features.

PAULDEP--You may not see all the processes which start at boot in msconfig
You have to check seven locations, listed in the order that their items launch at start-up:
    1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    2. the "load=" line in the [windows] section in C:\Windows\WIN.INI
    3. the "run=" line in the [windows] section in C:\Windows\WIN.INI
    4. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ RunServices
    5. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    6. C:\Windows\AllUsers\StartMenu\ Programs\Startup
    7. C:\Windows\StartMenu\Programs\ Startup

Charlesvar, I downloaded and ran AutoRuns and all was fine until I decided to test it by untagging one of my StartUp folder programs. Still worked fine and when I checked the Start Ups Menu item on the All Programs menu, it indeed revealed that the untagged item was no longer there. All fine so far - Now i go back and run AutoRuns and tag the aforementioned program back and exit. Lo and behold, the Start Ups menu item is no longer on the All Programs menu. Not even rebooting would restore it.

I used GoBack to set me back straight and tested it all again. Same results. :(

    Is your system similarly affected?

    Hi 'dude,

Not so far. I tried this with something harlmless - nwiz and MS calendar reminders.

I think your running SSD, look under tools > startups and see if whatever you disabled shows up there.

The symptom that you describe happens if right clicking > delete.

I'll keep checking on this, you got me worried now :)

    Regards - Charles

Let's be sure we're together on this. The item that disappears is the entire menu and all its submenus, located at Start > All Programs > StartUp. Previously it was there and when hovering over Start Up, it opened up to reveal all the shortcuts that are in the C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder.

When it disappears, due to using AutoRuns -first untagging a program and closing - then opening AutoRuns, retagging that item to get it back - poof, the entire listing on the Start > All programs > is gone - no StartUp listed there. The folder still exists at C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and the disabled program is back in there. I just don't think it should be editing my Start > All Programs menu to that extent. It's a bug for sure. Perhaps I should message the author since he asks for feedback.

Bottom line though, do you actually still have the listing at Start > All programs > Start Up? That's what I meant by, "Are you similarly affected? "

Otherwise, it works fine to disable or delete start ups and restores them back in the C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Start Menu\Programs\Startup just fine. If it would quit doing permant editing to the part of the system that it shouldn't be touching, I'd give it a better grade. It's no StartCop for sure. :)

Frankly, the quickest and easiest way I find to handle the start ups is using RegCleaner. I just use it to delete them and leave them in the automatic backup that it keeps. They can be restored from there in a heartbeat. I dump them accasionally when I realize they'll not ever be needed. Works fast and easy. I have StartCop but rarely use it since migrating to RegCleaner.

    No, doesn't happen to me.

Also noticed though that the site version is 6.0 - I'm using a previous version. I'll download the newest version and see what happens.

I have a lot of ways to disable startups - you mentioned startupcop and SSD also has the option and I have regcleaner as well plus the last free version of jvPowerTools. What I use mostly is System Safety Monitor, a process firewall. It monitors executes of apps and OS calls.

I find autoruns valuable because it's the program that shows the most startup locations, and so far, used mainly for info.
