I am using WinXP SP2, and I would like to know if there is a log that keeps track of when I have defragged my drives. It seems to me that Win95 or 98 had such a log, and it was pretty handy.
I am using the defragger that is built-in to WinXP. Thanks.

Don't think that inbuilt defragger writes any logs. You might check in Event Logs if there is anything.

Thank you for your answers, Steve Jones and rsinfo. I did do the *.log search and got a long list of logs, but could not identify any as being defrag logs.
On the MS Support Knowledge Base page, there is a utility for the Windows Script host to provide event logging for Disk Defragmenter, but I think it is over my head, so I will just give up on the idea.
I had hoped someone could just point me to something already existing in my system, but apparently that is not to be.
Thank you for your kind replies to my quest.

    Hello elbertf,

An option is to save the report that's available after the defrag is finished.

There is a View Report bar at the bottom, click on that, in the dialog box at the bottom, there is a Save as button. Give the file a name and save it to a folder.

The default name is VolumE.txt - give it any name and keep the .txt extension. Example: Defrag report (date).txt

    Regards - Charles

    Hello charlesvar,
Thank you for answering my quest for a Defrag log.
My Disk Defragmenter that came with WinXP Pro was copyright in 2001 by Microsoft and Executive Software International, Inc.; when it is running it lists an Analysis Report and a Defrag Report for each drive, but there is nothing I can do to them.
There is no other dialogue anywhere on the page.
When the defrag is completed, it immediately closes.
I did a Search on Drive C:\, D:\ and E:\ for "VolumE.txt ", including System Folders and Hidden Files and Folders, with no hits.
Thank you for trying, but I'll just forget this idea for now.

    elbert :)

    Hi elbert,

That doesn't sound like the defragger that I've seen run on either Home or Pro, and haven't seen anything different unless it was a third party's.

As far as I know, XP's defragger was written for MS by DiskKeeper.

How do you access the defragger?

    The standard ways:

To open Disk Defragmenter, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.

Or My Computer, click on drive > properties > tools > defragmenter.

EDIT: I just went into the defrag's Help tab, and yep, I get the same info that I quoted from your post. Really puzzled

Uploaded an image to show the options that I referred to.

    Regards - Charles

    Charles,

You ask some good questions :)
Going through Run > Programs > Accessories, etc. I did get the page you talked about with the chance to review and save the report. Checking the Help and About, I do have the Defrag program that I said before, by Executive Software etc., and it is Version 1.0
The way I order my defrags is with a shortcut on my desktop "Defreg CDE" which I made a long time ago. It's handy, but it has no bells & whistles.
I made a .bat command "Defrag_CDE.bat" with the text
    Defrag C:

    Defrag D:

    Defrag E:

so when I use the shortcut, it starts the process and continues to defrag all three drives, then closes.
When I go to C "\Windows\System32\defrag.exe and check Properties, I get the same copyright and ownership as before, but here I get Version 5.1.2600.2180.
    Oh well. Thanks again.

    elbert :)

Thanks elbert for answering my puzzlement :)

The answer is your use of the .bat file, so you would have to defrag manually to get a chance to create a report.

All your version info match mine.

    Regards - Charles

True - Executive Software aka Diskeeper Corporation - their current name AFAIK.
