Are there any DVD readers for computers that will read both sides of a DVD-R disk without turning it over? If so, how do I know this when looking at models on the dealar sites or at other places on the 'net?

I have been looking at DVD readers for sevaral days now and I have not seen anything about this anywhere.

    Alex,

None that I know of at this time. This is true of PC readers and of stand-alone as well. If this does occur it would be easy to see that it would be a big marketing plug, so it would be pretty common knowledge. As i understand it the depth of the dvd readers would at least increase by 25%. Currently DVD readers are available in half height size, but even allowing for 2 of these and the tray itself, they would be 125% of the current readers we are using today.

What you write makes sense; but, hard disks can have four platters and a read/write head for each side of each platter and they are noticably thinner than a CD or DVD drive. So, if someone wanted to make a DVD reader that reads both sides if a single platter without having to flip it over, I'm sure they could.

But, it goes back to that old marketing strategy of, "Why should I change my product if people are buying all I can make of what I'm making? ".

Looks like for now I'll have to settle for the common DVD reader.

    Thanks for your input.

I think if this happens, first it will allow you to turn over the CD/DVD disc and record the other side.

Then later a drive that will do both sides without turning over.

BUT.... then they will need to mfg double sided disc's. As far as I know these don't exist.

It is my understanding that the -R format is double-sided.

Then am I missing something here? What is the question?

    Just turn it over!

    Ok,

HDD platters are read by magnetic pickups. They read both sides of the platter simultaneously. CD-Roms and DVD-Roms (and CDR/RW DVD-R/RW DVD+R/RW) are read by laser, or read optically. these devices are completely different and cannot be compared in this instance.

I do agree that the idea of being able to read a dual-sided disc without turning it over manually would be great but at this time it is not available. There are no dual sided CDs as I know it, but there are certainly dual-sided DVDs on the market today.

Hope this helps clear things up.

    mflynn,

It seems that too many times in these threads when I explain why I want to do or know something, someone hijacks the thread and takes it off into tangential issues that have nothing to do with the original specific question. This results in the original question not getting explored fully.

So, I'll just leave it at that.
