A few weeks ago my laptop screen started flickering. No pattern, just random flickering while I was using it.

I've just returned from a week's holiday and turned it on to find that it no longer works. The screen lights - I can see the backlight is working but it is blank. I'm using it right now via an external display so the laptop is working well other than the screen.

I've removed the surround from the screen but there are no obvious breaks or frayed wires.

It's an HP and I reckon it's a couple of years old.

Does anyone know what's involved in repairing it and is there a "how to" guide on the net somewhere? Most guides refer to a dead backlight or inverter. (Could it be my inverter?).

If it's a shop job then what's the likely cost? I know a good local shop and wouldn't touch PCworld so no concerns on that front.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

It certainly sounds as if your screen has failed but without you telling us the name and model number I can't say much more.:)

It's an HP Pavilion but I'm not sure of the exact model number.

The screen lights so I think it's something to do with the signal cable, rather than the screen.

Is it easy enough to reseat or replace the signal cable?

    thanks

    thanks Mark

I opened the laptop earlier and couldn't see anything obvious.....no changes to screen.
then suddenly it popped back into life.

I reassembled everything and it's flickered a couple of times but so far it's working ok.

I've bookmarked that page for future reference.

    Many thanks
    Dave

That's good. With the constant bending back and forth when the top is opened and shut the wires break internally so if it goes again you'll know where to look.
