    Hello alboy,

Microsoft's new Anti-Spyware program may be looking for bootlegged copy's of windows

"Microsoft Validation ", now optional, will be mandatory for AU and other MS software downloads. So it's not just the beta.

There are plenty of download sources minus validation, such as super geeks.

two clicks to verify this article is wrong

    Code:

Validate Windows and obtain the download
Yes, please validate Windows and take me to the download. (If an ActiveX dialog box appears, please click Yes.)

No, do not validate Windows at this time, but take me to the download.

    Hey, Joe,
I don't have a pirated copy of Windows to test, so could you please tell me what happens if someone flunks validation? Are they simply denied the download, or do they get their comp nuked? Is there any recourse for people who feel MS is in error about the validity of their copy of Windows?
    Ever curious,
    Johanna

The nonsense in that article is that its a big conspiricy that a software company, plagued with piracy and counterfiting is trying to get you to make sure you are running a legal copy of the software. Such a clandestine activity, this validation, that theres a FAQ on it.

    Emphasis mine below.

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx

    Q.
What if my copy of Windows fails the validation process or I believe I have received pirated software?

    A.
In either case, Microsoft recommends the following steps: First, turn on Automatic Updates to make sure your system is being protected while you are resolving the problem. Second, use the resources on the Windows Genuine Advantage pages to learn how to recognize genuine Windows software. Third, see your reseller and ask for genuine Windows software, using a print-out of the validation session for support. Finally, if you can't get assistance from your reseller and you suspect you’ve been victimized, fill out a Report Piracy Now report so Microsoft can have a record of the transaction and determine if addition action is warranted.

    Q.
Do all Windows users need to validate in order to obtain genuine Windows downloads, or is validation limited to particular versions of Windows?
    A.
Validation is currently recommended, but not required. Should it become required in the future, only users of Windows XP and Windows 2000 customers (client, not server) will be required to validate. Genuine Windows downloads will continue to be available, without validation, to customers running Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows Server 2003, and Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3. However, Genuine Windows downloads are not available for older versions of Windows (Windows 95, NT 4.0 with Service Pack 2 and earlier), and non-Microsoft operating systems.
