Sure, RobS it is legal to use--for legal purposes. However, much if not the vast majority of p2p applications such as limewire are for illegal purposes, e.g., downloading copyrighted music for which the d/l'er doesn't have a license. But nobody is ever going to jail for simply using Limewire itself--its what you use it for, that matters.

As far as the safety is concerned, I'm not sure if you are referring to spyware/viruses coming into your computer from installing it or from opening your computer up to others. I do know that in its earlier versions, Limewire installed adware that broadcast my email to its gambling/casino sponsors. However, that program (Limeshop IIRC) is no longer part of their package. I noticed no change in comp performance/adware after trying a newer version. For the most part, I believe that other users can only see what you have decided to share with them, but of course, the operative phrase is most users. Perhaps others here can clarify how much risk there is in this.

I use Limewire all the time, for about 2 years, and in only 2 cases did Nortons AntiVirus stop a download because it detected something. I think it is generally safe, an up to date AntiVirus Program is a must.

Coomon sense needs to prevail also. If your are looking for something and you know it should be a certain size, do not download something that is a 1/4 of that size. Viruses are typically very small programs.

Overall it believe it to be safe

Ok, if your not worried about downloading illegal music, the music, picture and video downloads are fine. It's the software downloads that you really need to watch out for. Even with the most up to date versions of anti virus/spyware/adware I would not suggest downloading executable programs from a p2p.
