I usually close all my open windows on Win7-64 pro before I do my nightly shut down.

Is it safe to let the windows Shut Down close these files, particularly non-critical files like NotePad, Music etc or should I keep closing them myself?

Hi Rob. As long as you have saved your files before initiating the shut down process then there is no harm in keeping those windows open other than the Windows shutdown process taking longer because it will have more processes that the system will have to end.

Personally I would just close any open files and then shut down the machine as it will result in less processes that could cause the shutdown process to hang and cause data loss if you did not save your data beforehand.

    Evan,

    Thanks, that sounds about right.
    I'll continue closing windows first.
