I have heard that while it is legally possible to upgrade from XP to 7 that it required a CLEAN install (ie that all data on C: is lost and a fresh install is performed), is that correct?
I assume then that you boot your PC using the W7 upgrade disk and then you will be asked to insert the XP installation disk to prove that you actually own it.

Being in the education industry I am able to purchase Windows 7 Ultimate UPGRADE very cheaply.

    Is that correct?
    Thanks

Any Windows XP upgrade to 7 requires a clean install - MS have a useful article here guiding you through the steps .....

Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7

In addition to running the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard I would also make an independent back up of your data - WET is not infallible - there are posts here to support that.
