In deleting my previous system partition, drive letter 'C', I created unutilised space in that position on that hard drive. I told Windows Setup to format it as NTFS and to install XP (or so I thought) to that partition.

I expected that the drive letter 'C' would be assigned by Setup to the new system partition but instead it shifted the drive-letters of the following partitions up by one place each, then tacked the new system partition onto the end of the series, assigning to it the next available letter ('I')! This will muck-up all my file-paths and cause all kinds of mayhem if allowed to stand.

But Windows 'Computer Management' applet allows all drive-letters to be changed except for the system partition. Does this mean I'm stuck with it, or is there a work-around for this?

If there's none, I shall have to format/reinstall XP all over again :(

Hi I was a bit late, Ive left a msg in the other thread.

Are you dual booting with puppy linux? As this might be why in whichever case shouldn't effect the boot or operation of windows.

Do you or did you have any sort of boot manager installed like smart or gag?

I must admit I havn't messed with dual boot for ages, I have three machines and lots of hd's with linux, ubuntu, tinycore etc and as long as the bios is set right they boot.

So I would wait for one of the experts to give you advice, and I'm glad it's working at last.

Your original problem like I said could have just been the bios set incorrectly, Regards Ian.

With the utmost chagrin, I have to say that I spoke too soon. The whole thing has unravelled and I'm back to square one. This is turning into one of the worst nightmares I've yet experienced with computers.

I'll abort this thread and revert to the original one - since the problem continues to be what it was from the start. But right now I'm going to bed.

Thanks for your moral support. I need all I can get.
