Tonight's wind chill readings will be -58° F in parts of North Dakota! I can't imagine how people up there are coping with such weather.

Here in the southern piedmont of NC, it is supposed to drop down into single digits early next week. Been a few years since it's been that cold around here.

I feel sorry for all the folk that are having to cope with minus degrees. The coldest it gets here in Victoria, Australia is about 6 C in mid winter. We think we are hard done by having to put up with it.

At the moment here it is our summer, 25 C today, sunny, with a little wind, but up north in Queensland the temp as been off the scale at around 49 C which is about 135 F....I couldn't abide that I am sure.

Hope you are all keeping safe in the US and UK with your bad weather.

    best wishes,

Just got a severe weather notice of hazardous wind chill readings for this area starting tomorrow. That *is* unusual for this far south with the exception of higher elevations.

Take a look at the map below. Hazardous wind chill readings go as far south as the Mexican border! When's the last time that happened ?

Supposed to be in the teens tonight and tomorrow night here in the panhandle of Florida. With 15 MPH winds. It was 22 this morning and the winds were about 20 and gusting to about 35 or so.
Was gonna play in the sprinkler, but the hose was froze. :D

Better check that antifreeze. I just recently helped someone replace their car's thermostat, and the coolant looked clear as water. I flushed out the old coolant and replaced it with a 50/50 mixture. The owner had been topping the radiator off with water from time to time, and that is a bad idea.

Yep, the cold hit here too! Was -22°F with a wind chill of -41°F when I got of work this morning! Temps are supposed to rise to 0°F by tomorrow. I was fortunate enough that hubby could bring me to work and pick me up in the morning. Many co-workers cars wouldn't start when they tried to leave.

Glad that it isn't supposed to last, warming up by the end of the week. Hope everyone stays warm and safe!

Water in the gas lines? Or maybe too thick motor oil?

Back in 1983, the temps dropped to a record low of -5° around here, and I saw stranded vehicles with frozen fuel lines.

EDIT: Found this in a special weather statement today...

IF DRIVING... KEEP YOUR GAS TANK NEAR FULL TO AVOID ICE IN THE TANK AND FUEL LINES.

I don't understand how a full tank of gas can inhibit fuel line freeze up. Looks like if a vehicle had water in fuel tank that it would make its way to the fuel line and freeze up anyway. I usually keep a our car tanks topped off with gas anyhow.

The temps are starting to drop here. Expecting -25 to -35 wind chill. While leaving my dialysis clinic the wind off of Lake Ontario just about blew me back in through the door. Looks like they're going to get up to 5 foot of snow in the northern section of the county. I'm hibernating tomorrow.

In a gas tank with air in it (free space), condensation can occur, water droplets will form on the tank walls. All gas has a % of water in it already, air has moisture dissolved in it. The less air, the less moisture and chance of condensation. Water is lighter than gas and will float on top of the gas, just like cream and milk.

The fuel pump inside a gas tank is on the bottom of the tank, gas is pulled from near the bottom. If the gas level is low, the chances of water making it into the fuel line is greater.

I thought water was heavier than gasoline. At least I recall some of it sitting in the bottom of a mower gas tank before.

It got down to 6 degrees last night. Before I went to bed, I threw a cup of hot water into the night air, and it turned to snowy like vapor before it hit the ground.

    Check this video out...

Went to 9* Fahrenheit last night where I live, and the forecast for tonight is 12*. In terms of single night lows a number of records were set around the state. And it adds up to the coldest overnight low we've had in around 30 years.

That said, three years ago we had a 10-day run where the day-time / night-time range was 30* - 15*.

I well remember that it was the first time in my life that I physically hurt from the cold. And I was evermore glad when it finally did warm up.

And for those of you in places where the -60's stuff is hitting, my hat's off to you. But only speaking figuratively -- 'cause my bald spot freezes if I literally remove it!

Back in 1977 (that was the year that Buffalo, NY measured snowfall in feet), it stayed below freezing in our area for over thirty days. It was so cold, the ponds and lakes began to freeze over. That is very unusual for the our region.

Here we go with round II.

I made myself go for a walk around the city lake this evening and liked to froze to death. (diabetes exercise) They're calling for possible power outages since this cold air mass plans to stay with us for a week or so.

I've got friends in Aiken SC, would they also be up to their ears in snow too James?

We had the other side of climate last week, four days of 44 C which is unheard of here in Melbourne really - then on the fifth day it was 20 C after a cool change.

I hope things lighten up for you all in the East,

    kind regards,

James are you diabetic. If so, CINNAMON aids in lowering blood glucose. When you cook using a diabetes cookbook you have follow the recipe to the letter. Or the recipe does not work. Measure every thing with a digital scale.

Back to the -30F wind chill with lake effect snow here. Last night the actual temperature was -15F with Watertown to the north of us going down to -47F actual. My mug of hot cocoa is helping me to warm up right now.

    Very doubtful.

Aiken is close to Augusta, GA (home of the Master's golf tournament). That part of the country is lower in sea level than we are and too close to the warm Gulf Stream to get much in the way of snow.

Is that regular supermarket cinnamon, or the expensive stuff ?

I've heard of the benefits of using cinnamon to lower elevated blood sugar. I used to take cinnamon pills, but I can't remember how effective they were. I currently take 500mg of Metformin ER three times a day. My A1C runs around 5.0 to 5.2. It used to be higher until I lost about 40 pounds.

Wow, that sounds unusually cold for that area.

I would have thought the lakes would be froze over by now, but you're still getting lake-effect snow?

That is good news, I must contact them again as I have not heard in awhile.

I have flown into Augusta, via Atlanta, via Dallas, from San Francisco all in the one day and stayed. I remember driving past the golf club on the way from Augusta airport to Aiken. The trip was a long day, but worth it.

    kind regards,

Just looked in and read Tony's post about Gas/Petrol. You are right James, water is heavier than gas/petrol.
Most modern vehicles running fuel injection have a tank with a collecter area where the fuel pump inlet resides. With the special filters on the pickup points, it's not easy to get water into the system unless there is a large volume of water due to continuously running the fuel tank near empty where condensation will take place in that vacant space.
Always keep your fuel tank as full as possible and if you suspect that there is water in the tank, Iso Propyl Alcohol wiil mix the water with the petroleum and clear the water out.
This phenomenon (water in the tank) was common in older vehicles in NZ and I've had to resort to this procedure many times during my life as an Auto Tech.
We had to drain the tank, then mix 4 gallons of petrol with 1 quart of IPA and shake the vehicle (two guys rocking the car side to side) to ensure the water got mixed with the petrol/IPA mix and it worked every time. Neil.
