I went onto a Web Site to download something and it asked me to download something called Download Manager first. Is that safe? It sounds kind of virusy to me.

Download manager have been around for years. Most are safe. In my opinion, with todays internet speeds, it is not needed.

Hi Kat. Adding to what Bill said, if any website asks you to install some other program before allowing you to download the file you want, then the website is most likely risky and you should not download files from websites that have this type of behavior.

Download managers aren't needed and I would not trust a website asking you to download some other program first. Your computers security could get compromised and the system could become infected with malware.

Note, some trustworthy sites prompt to install a download manager, e.g. some Microsoft download pages will do that. For example, if want to download IE8 for Windows XP, you can download multiple files at once: IE8, its security update package and an anti-malware program. But the downloads can be obtained without using the MS download manager.

I had wondered about that myself. Thanks for asking the question VisKat.
