I use a program called Mailwasher to check emails before opening them. I can either blacklist or friends list a sender plus delete the badk emails prior to opening them in Thunderbird. Is this still necessary these days?

To me Mailwasher is an extra step.... Unneeded step.

For pesky spam mail I go online to my ISP and mark them as spam there.

But, isn't going to your ISP an extra step?

Yes it is...if and when I go there once a month for the pesky spammers.

All others I deal with in my local email client.

But nothing magic has changed... If you're getting tons of spam you can keep on doing what you've been doing.

Steve is correct that you could exist without Mailwasher. However, I have used it for about 15 years and like being able to bounce, blacklist, whitelist, etc. But I like to tinker with stuff and Mailwasher lets me tinker.

If you are using an email client - Outlook, Thunderbird, etc, it does let you handle any suspect email before it gets downloaded to your computer. My wife likes Mailwasher for that.

Sometimes just changing your password will do wonders.
