    Hello all,
I have been having a problem with my soundcard (CMI8338 PCI) and my Modem (Zoom 56k PCI)
It does not happen all the time but it is unpredictable. If I go to a website where sound is played, or I play a sound on my system I hear the sound repeat rapidly (like a skipping cd would sound) the sound will continue but then it disconects my modem. My Modem will still indicate that I am on line and connected but if I try to go somewhere or transfer files I get errors like I am off line. Both devices share the same IRQ and I tried changing the IRQ on either but it says this can nnot be changed. I also get no sound sometimes when i boot and a reboot will fix that. Any help will be appreciated. I tried disableing IRQ Steering (unless I didnt do it correctly) with no avail

    Thanks

    Tom

AH Yes the old familiar Sound Card VS Modem fight.

Both devices share the same IRQ and I tried changing the IRQ on either but it says this can nnot be changed

The Modem is causing that. It is more than likely LOCKED onto one IRQ and will not allow to change it for either the sound card or the modem.

You could try removing the Modem ( from device manager and physicaly) and letting the Sound reset itself and then TRY putting the Modem back in ( in a different slot if possible ) and HOPE that it changes and works.

But if you wish to have a more reliable and permanent fix, go get and External Modem, put it on COM 1 or 2 ( preferably 2 ) and watch the IRQ problems disapear.

Even if you were to get the existing Modem to work, it may only last until you decide to maybe change the OS. Then you could be right back in the same leaking boat.
