My son, a user with minimum knowledge received an Ipod for Christmas. He has an ME-based computer as do I. I often assist him by telephone, but need advice and opinions concerning the best thing to do given his situation.

    1. I see that only XP with SP2 is now available for sale and am somewhat reluctant to recommend he go with XP on a system about three years old which works well in all other regards, particularly given all the other problems of legacy software compatability with XP.

    2. I have located via Google a driver for Ipod that claims to work with ME. If this were on my own computer where I could work with it until it either worked or I gave up, this is the option I would choose, however you all have probably had the difficult experience of assisting people by telephone....

I would appreciate your opinions/experiences concerning Ipod and getting it to work.

    Thanks

If you post his system specs, we can give you a real-world idea about how well his PC would run XP and where it might need beefing up.

As to the software piece, there is nothing written for ME that won't run on XP and very, very little 9X software that has problems where running in compatibility mode doesn't cure the situation.

Sorry but no first-hand iPod experience.

First of all, the iPod software is designed to run on windows 2000 or windows xp only, it will not install on other versions of windows. The iPod was originally designed for MACs and was ported to windows as an after thought, so the developers didn't see the need to design the software for older versions of windows.

Also, the ipod itself requires a usb 2.0 connection. Most ME and all earlier versions of windows do not natively support usb 2.0 and one must install a usb 2.0 card (usually pci) and the drivers that come with the card.

I ran into this problem when my daughter got an ipod. Her system was windows 98. I found hacked versions of the ipod software and drivers online, but could not get them to work with windows 98. I'm pretty computer literate and these hacked versions of ipod are 'hit or miss' and do not always work despite one's computer skills.

Your best bet would be to upgrade to xp if the hardware will support it.

If you want to upgrade to windows xp just make sure that you have 256mb of ram or your computer will run slower than Fat Albert :)

Honestly, this is gonna sound rude but...I am sorry
iPods ****. really, they do. Actually, the iPod is pretty sweet, but iTunes REALLY *****. I have about 15GB of music, and Itunes, when installing, asked if I wanted it to auto-organize everything. Me, 2 freinds, n my mom all watched me click "No "...It did it anyway, and now I cant find hardly any music. Also, it asked if I wanted it to become my default music player, I clicked "No" n ir did it anyway. the Def. Player thing was ez to fix, but I still havent straightened out my music...
I prefer the Archos Gmini 120. Cheaper, more features, and its plug n play. Plug it in to any XP or 2K machine, n u can transfer files. no software needed at all for XP. 2K only needs drivers. Its basically an ext. HDD, with a headphone and micropohone port, along with an LCD
    just my 2cents
