    Hi Guys,
I have a small problem with my network.
Every so often, I get an error bubble on my wifi connection icon in the notification area. The error is:

    Windows System Error.
There is a IP address conflict with another System on the network.

Is that my router or is that a windows problem?
Anything I can do to fix this?

    Thanks
    Sven

If your PC is set up for DHCP then there is probably a static IP in the DHCP range somewhere on the LAN. So occasionally your DHCP server tries to assign that IP and does not know someone else has it. If your PC has a static IP then it may be in the range of your DHCP server so when that IP is assigned to another network device by DHCP it conflicts. Either way you need to make sure there are no static IPs being used that are in the range configured for your DHCP server.

As an aside, most DHCP servers do allow you to assign a specific IP address to a network device based on its MAC address. You have to configure it but the DHCP server will reserve that IP for the device with that MAC address and assigned only that IP to that device. That way you can configure your device to have a virtual static IP while still configuring it to use DHCP.

First how is your PC configured? Go to control panel -> network connections. Right click on your network connection and select properties. Scroll down and click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click the properties button. If Obtain an IP Address Automatically is selected then you are using DHCP. If the other is selected then you are using a static IP. If the later then simply change selection and reboot. Just be aware that if you use an IP or name to remotely connect to your PC (e.g. Remote Desktop) you will no longer be able to do so with out knowing the assigned IP address which can change.

It you are already using DHCP then it is more complicated. You need to get the IP address that is conflicting and find what device it is. When you find it you need to change it to use DHCP.

    Thanks,
    Found it
It says obtain IP address automatically.
Below is: Use the following IP address
and I would have to input it myself.
I probably have to do this on all computers to make sure there is no conflict, correct?

    Thanks
    Sven
