I installed Norton Internet Security a few months ago and both the firewall and the virus scanner seem to be doing the job. The visus scanner has stopped a few infected files before they could do any harm. My question though is about the firewall. From time to time I get a warning that there has been an intrusion attempt and I can look at the log and see some identification numbers related to the intrusion attempt. So far I have pretty much ignored them but I was wondering if I should be concerned about the intrusion attempts and if so, what should I do?

Most, if not all, of the intrusion attempts you are seeing are from hacker wannabees. They are looking for computers that have become infected with one of several "remote control" trojans.

If they find one, they can take control of that PC. If the trojan isn't there, they can do nothing.

Still not a bad idea to block them.

You will see them - especially if you are connected for long periods. Where I am, they seem to come in waves. Some weeks I will get dozens. Then none for a couple weeks.

What you're seeing are the same hits you've been getting right along. The difference is that they're now being blocked by the firewall and you're being alerted. Consider that a good thing.

    Newt & DrDoom,

Thanks for your responses. That answers my question/concern. My hunch was to ignore the intrusion attempts but I wanted to make sure.
