Lately and ONLY lately every time I turn on my computer my internet connection is down.
I am a Rogers Canada cable subscriber and they say it must be a Win 2000 problem because my cable connection and the modem supplied are showing good connection info from his position.
When I reconnect the local area network connections by unticking the boxes for ...client Microsoft Networks.....File and printer sharing and Internet Protocol (TCP / IP ) then shutting down and reticking/ starting up again...it works every time. What is wrong with my system and how do I fix it properly so its connected on startup?
    Any help appreciated .

Probably the quickest "fix" would be to remove as much of your networking load as possible and do a clean install. The following assumes you are using a regular ethernet network card rather than USB.

    - safe mode and from device manager, remove all associated devices.
    - shut down, remove the NIC, start up, shut down again and replace the NIC.
    - start up and reload networking.

Thanks Newt....I'm not sure I fully understand the process for the "fix" however. Can you describe it for less computer literate sorts ( like me ! )...for instance what is the NIC ? ( Network I? Card ) Will remove all associated devices affect my sound card etc?
    Sorry for the stupid questions.

sqig - the only stupid question is the one you don't ask and that's more stupid person than stupid question. Any time you aren't sure, do ask.

NIC = Network Interface Card = Ethernet Card = the card that takes a cord with a plug that looks like a phone plug except much larger.

Removing it for a short time should not have any effect on any other parts of your PC. It's just the easiest way to zero out all the network settings and give you a fresh start.

Booting into safe mode without networking support is a safety precaution to make sure none of the network services get upset when you use Device Manager to get rid of any and all network adapters.

Shutting down and physically removing the card after you remove it from device manager just completes the process and a reboot without the card lets the OS know it ain't in the networking business any longer.

When you start up a second time with the card back in place, your PC should "see" the card and install it along with needed supporting software. But all your network settings will be gone and you'll need to set things up again. So make sure you know how it is set now.
