I know that there isn't a 2003 forum here and that not many have had a chance (yet) to play around with Windows Enterprise Server 2003, but I thought I would ask anyway, hoping it will be something simple. FYI, the basic interface is a lot like 2000. Basically IE 6 starts with high security settings. The administrator (me) can change it down to medium to allow the average site to load. I created a different user and this user is not allowed for some reason to change the security setting, it stays at high and grayed out. I can't even get hotmail to load. Anyway to fix this without giving the user full administration privledges?

    Xprotocol,
I've been dual booting XP and W2K3 for a month or two. The default install is locked down severely, for security and reliability reasons, as obviously a Server is meant to stay up virtually indefinitely with little reboots. So providing you don't mind compromising this added security and stability you can turn W2K3 into an updated XP, even making it look identical to XP with the XP themes etc. I find the "tweaked" W2K3 faster and more stable than XP SP1+

The following link tells you how to switch of the IE enhanced security option so you can surf the net, enable graphics acceleration, install DX 9 even switch off the annoying shutdown tracker.

Thanks for the link! Are all those features you just mentioned disabled for the administrator as well? I had a friend running 2k3 for a while but switched back to XP because he couldn't play any games.

Also, I know Win 2K3 is relatively new but does anyone know of any highly active forums that are specifically for Win 2k3? Just feels like I'm off topic when I post in a 2000 forum :p

    Here is fine.

We've discussed adding a 2003 section but opted to wait until there was more need for it. So few running that OS now that the section would be pretty inactive.

Maybe we need to rename this one Windows 2000/3 or something.

    Xprotocol,
All these features are disabled by default when you install 2003, yes including the administrator. As mentioned these added features apparently slightly compromise the stability of 2003 if used as a server that's supposed to stay up for a long time. For other than as a server the OS is next to useless if you leave them disabled, especially without hardware acceleration which made my 128Mb GF4 4200 perform worse than one of those old 1Mb 2D cards from 8 or 10 years ago.
But with everything turned on and DX9x installed etc, this is one nice OS. Even my TV card works better than under XP!

    Newt,
Good idea about adding W2K3 to the BBS. I realise there aren't many takers yet and of course it's really for a business environment. I'm just enjoying this "newer verson of XP ". Because it's visually very similar to XP when everything is switched back on in the UI and from what I can tell under the bonnet as well (apart from all the server components) it probably should be included in XP/2003?

    But 2000/2003 would be sufficient.
