Try disabling the Universal Plug and Play service on the computers and see if the problem is resolved.

The easiest way to disable it to to go to this page, download and run "Unplug 'N Pray." You can also read up on what this service does and why you don't need it.

If that service is running, you might consider going to Black Viper's site and using the guide there to shut down all of XP's other unnecessary services.

I have the Netgear DG834 Router for 2 computers - no problems if both on line and no problems with the main PC shut down and just using my laptop.
My main PC is shut down at the moment and I am just using my laptop - I have disabled UPnP (port 5000) in XP services and in the router setup itself.

You will see the UPnP setting in the router and how to disable it from there also.
