I learned a couple of days ago that, although even if I am thorough in keeping my computer clean (History, Temporary Internet Files etc.) there is a file which still keeps information of where I have been-not sure I like that!!!:(

The offending file??? Index.dat. I thought this file was needed to run my computer smoothly after finding I couldn't delete it, but I was quite wrong, it is-as far as I'm concerned-a needless invasion of the users privacy, I totally agree with the progarammer who built a tool that clears these files (Yes, there are multiple Index.dat's, in Internet Explorer & Outlook Express)

This program will also clear files from your History folder which will normally not be affected by "Clear History ", .....AND, you can also use this progam to delete your Temporary Inernet Files, History etc. so that you only ever need to perform one task, and it's all gone!

This program is called Spider, And it is free.:D

I have found that it does not work on Windows ME, but I have seen it run on 2 computers running Win98se very well.

    Dig.

Yep.... Spider's great. Even better, though not free (free trial though) is Window Washer. And it does work on Windows ME.

    Spider Works on 98.

Does anyone know of a tool that'll do the same, but also clear the "C:\WINDOWS\Temp" file, all in one hit?

Window Washer works on them all. Again....it's not free...but do give the trial a whirl. Does a great job.

    spider

After clearing the history and cookies, there are still hidden files?
Wat does the SPIDER actually do? Won't harm or delete important info?

Do I understand correctly that the bug has been removed from IE6, so you wouldn't need Spider?

CherylAnn - spider will, if you tell it to, mark the various index.dat files for deletion at next reboot. You can't get rid of them while windows is running and they do hold some history information.

The files will be created new, fresh, clean the next time you open your browser.

It will also (with some browser versions) remove temporary internet files (if you want) and cookies (if you want). In no case have I ever heard of it doing any bad things though. Harmless cleaning is all.
