Internet handover is go-go-go! ICANN to take IANA from US govt

What will be the ultimate consequence of the US government's bowing out of the IANA contract and ceding control to ICANN?

Some politicians think it will pave the way for authoritarian governments, such as Iran and China's to have more of a say in how the Net is run, which could chill free speech. Others say that it will actually aid free speech by giving end users more of a voice in how the Net is run.

I personally think, that given Snowden's revelations of the monitoring the NSA has been conducting since 2006, the handover can only be a good thing, though it might be largely symbolic, since nothing can really stop the monitoring.

 

Been getting a lot of emails from organizations like "fight for the future ", the ACLJ, and others that are indicating otherwise. Given my lack of faith in the current (U.S.) administration, I fear that giving ICANN control of the web could possibly lead to censorship of independent media outlets and a host of other web sites.

 

Time for a change in US government. A lot of people are sick and tired of Nothing getting done again politics as usual. The rich politicians and their rich friends get richer. People who never worked a day in their lives nor paid any taxes get everything for nothing and we the middle class get to pay for it all. I hope Hillary does not get voted in as president. I read that email debacle of hers got hundred of US servicemen killed.

 

I wonder if the new (Trump) administration can reverse the giveaway? I've heard that there is no reset button once the transition to ICANN is completed.

 

I don't know how our new president elect stands on the issue. You can't even get members of congress to talk about it. I keep getting "The jury is still out on that legislation.. "
