The wife and I have Win XP Home on two computers networked by a crossover cable. Since receiving these 6 months ago all has worked fine. She advised me that recently she cannot download certain URLs. All others download fine. The ones she cannot load are the ones she orders medicine; shops; and other interest to her. She can come to this room (please help so she won't) and use this PC and the URLs download fine. She states this just happened recently (but couldn't give a date).

I don't know what to look for in searching for the problem and probably couldn't fix it if I found the problem.

I looked for a "repair" for IE as I used to have in Win 98. Couldn't find it.

Any help you may offer for her to keep her ............, "self" out of here and back where she belongs would sure be appreciated.

She claims not to have changed anything, settings, etc. This I don't doubt as she is careful about that.

    Hiya Mudd
Have you checked her hosts file? Perhaps this thread will be useful?

Please notice that I am a beginner. Maybe I wasn't specific. She does not get the "Web Page cannot be found." The page seems to be loading but it never finishes. She has about 10 or 11 little squares on the bottom and it goes to about 5 or 6 and stalls. I have left it on for several minutes and never get an error page or cannot find, or whatever. It just sets there and never finishes.

We have IE 6 by the way.

Again I say, this is something fairly new. It has worked perfectly until just recently.

For starters, go to Start--> Settings--> Control Panel--> Internet Options. Delete all the temporary internet files.

Did that. Have done that prior but tried again. It's strange in that all of the pages for Merck Medco are unavailable on her PC. I can open them easily.

Until recently she could also. The status bar at the bottom shows downloading and gets to a point and hangs. Nothing else happens. No part of the page loads. Blank screen.

I took a look at the HTML on that page you mentioned at Merck. It is largely javascript.
Looking for a download for XP of the Windows scripting host lead to one for Win2000 that I tried to install. It wouldn't work on XP.

    A couple things to try:
    Open IE.
Go to Tools, Internet Options, Security tab. Click on "Internet" and set the default security settings to be sure javascript is enabled. It wouldn't hurt to set the others (Local Intranet, etc.) to default, as well.

If that doesn't work, the only way I know to be sure all your scripting files are all right is to do a system file check.
Put in your XP installation CD. When the window pops up (if it does), choose "Exit" to close it.
Go to Start--> Run and type: sfc /scannow
This will take a while, but will check all your Windows files to be sure they are not corrupted and are in their original versions ( "sfc" stands for "system file check ").

All my luck to you (and more).

    Thank You Abraxas

I'm going to print that out and take it very easy one step at a time. I'm getting into territory that I have never been.

I will post back, thank all of you for the help and suggestions.

I'm stuck in the same Mudd

Hey Mudd, wanted to let you know I am going through the exact same situation. I network 2 pc's running XP pro via crossover cable. My kids machine has stopped loading certain webpages as well. We just did a hardware upgrade and reinstalled OS's on both pc's and now they can no longer log-on anywhere. Any site that requires you to sign in... no go! That seems to be the only thing connecting all the websites that are giving us trouble. Another interesting one... newegg.com, shop there all the time, can't access the site from kids machine. Very strange. If you find a solution please pass it on and I will do the same.

    Thanks and gl!!!!

I changed the setting on the Security. There were at medium level. No help there.

I put the installation disk in and followed your instructions. There was a long scan and nothing came up indicating needed to change or rewrite, etc. Scan completed. No help there.

When I got to the page the Status Bar show a quickloading, goes away and starts again but never getting to the end. About 4 bars or so.

These machine are Dell and under warranty. If I Call them I bet they say this is not their problem.

We live in the country near a very small city, maybe Two-Horse. There is no one here that I know that I would trust. Nearest city with Computer Repair Shops is about 50 miles.

I'm still open to any other suggestions, and I thank you for your efforts.

I'm not alone then! This seems unusual because of it happening on it's own, maybe!!!! Grouch, the wife, usually does nothing to her PC as far as settings so I don't think she has changed anything. She's more honest than I and would have told me if she did and take her licks!!!

If I am successful here, I will certainly let you know how I did it. If something else shows up that solves the problem from other sources, I'll certainly post back for you to see.

    Thanks everybody.

Are you guys up to a reinstallation?
Repair installations are easy, if time-consuming (an hour, maybe).
Boot from the CD, just like you were installing XP. Just go ahead with the installation.
Soon, you will be presented with a screen that asks if you want to repair by pressing "R" in the recovery console. This is not the repair option you want. Continue.
The next screen that gives you a repair option is the one you want. Press "R" on that screen.
XP will be repaired. It will ask for your CD key.
After you complete this, some of the updates from Windows Update will have to be reinstalled, but all your other settings, programs, etc. are completely unchanged.

    Perhaps worth a shot:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regsvr32 filename, where filename is one of the following file names, and then click OK:
    Shdocvw.dll
    Msjava.dll
    Urlmon.dll
    Mshtml.dll
    Browseui.dll

When you receive a message that states that registration succeeded, click OK.
Repeat steps 1 through 3 to register each of the files that are listed in step 2.
Reboot and see how you go.

Doing an IE repair could have done as much, but I think you'd have to re-download it in order to get the feature back?
XP comes with IE6 doesn't it?

    Daizy and Abraxas -

I've printed each of your suggestions and will do each of them "tomorrow." I will post the result back. I sure hope one or both of you are right about this.

I will lose my PC to Grouch if I can't get hers to go again.

    Thanks all.

    Maybe... Eureka?

MUDD... before you do anything else, READ THIS:

    http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-107

it appears to address our specific problem. Thanks to all but considering the fact that I just reinstalled my OS's and reconfigured my network that suggestion doesn't offer a viable resolution. This problem seems to be related to ICS.

You may have something there. I have a couple more suggestions of quick-fixes, too.

Download this zip file, right-click it and Extract to the Desktop. Open the folder and click "spider.exe ". Options will appear to delete your internet files, history, cookies, and also a fix for the index.dat file that is so difficult to clear (and can grow quite large):
    http://www.fsm.nl/ward/spider116.zip

You may have to enable showing everything in My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, View. Check the "show" boxes, and uncheck the "hide" boxes.
Go to Start--> Search. Click More Advanced Options. Check the first 3 boxes so you search everywhere.
    Search for "hosts ".
The one you want is in the system32/drivers/etc folder. Right-click it and rename it "hosts.bak ". Close the Search.
A new hosts file will be built.

I think I'm ready to tackle this tomorrow. Don't know for sure. The things that I need to do according to some of the information is well above my expertise. Don't think I have the guts to get into the registry as mentioned on one post.

Going to have to sleep on this. I'm an old codger and thick headed. This may be to far above me.

Your interest in helping me is certainly appreciated. If I had more hair I'd pull it out.

More information than you need, for sure. There is no guarantee that these things will solve your problem, so try the easiest things first, of course.
Take it one step at a time and you'll get through fine.
Try changing the name of the hosts file first. That is a fairly easy thing to try (if you already know how ).;)

Tried it all, what you recommended and even tried the part on Annoyances Page that Carameah furnished. Called the Dell people and they suggested I do a Repair. I told them that I had tried that already without any good result. He insisted I do it with him on the line. So I did. This time the machine stopped and gave a message that it had to shut down . Something about the repair could not be made because of............ Don't remember it all. They want me to do a format and reinstall, thinking that something is corrupt that can't be repaired normally. Maybe they are taking the easy way out? They're probably right.

Will do that tonight. I sure thank you for the time you spent assisting me. I suppose you and the others that do this for we Beginners know you are much appreciated. If you don't know, you should!
