I understand that this update is available and my son and grandsonhave gotten it and executed it. I have attempted to do so and whenever I click on the download link for it it takes me to the Microsoft update page where it is not one of the choices. What is causing thas and how can I get this upgrade? Thanks

ocalas2--I have heard nothing about IE6SP1a (which I assume is what you mean by 1a). The official download page for IE6SP1 says nothing.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp
The Security Bulletin page from MS
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/current.asp
lists a Cumulative Update for IE6 dated November 11.
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS03-048.asp
Could this be what you are referring to?
If you would post the URL for that download page, maybe that would help get a better answer.

    ocalas2,
Your link does not lead to an update for Intenet Explorer.

It´s an update for Windows XP.

    Regards,
    Christer

    Edited:

It contains IE6SP1 but this update can not be installed separately.

That's the XP service pack rather than an IE update. Probably does have some IE updates included.

    Newt,
    You´re correct!

It includes IE6SP1 but this update can not be installed separately.

I think that the link You provided is an "on the fly installation" which means that it is not downloaded for keeps.

Go to Windows Update Catalog, click "Find Updates ..." and choose "Windows XP RTM" and "Your Language ".

Next, click "Search" choose "Critical ..." and scroll down to second from the bottom.

Finally, click "Add" > "Go To Download Basket ", choose Your download folder and download.

    HTH,
    Christer
