Sorry if this is a long story, but it has been a long night trying to fix this problem::

A friend has a computer bought from another neighbour.
The original owner has cleared out all personal files.
The computer had a bad version of I.E 6 left.
This version would just keep crashing.
In order to get my friend running on the net we used an ISP disk
    which contained I.E 5.5.
    This version was installed.
The browser now will not allow any modification of the security tab within I.E >tools>options.
There is a green tick permanently at the bottom of browser.
If I try to access the Security tab, I get blank page and "Kernel32 dll error" "LEXplore error close- type speech ".
The browser will not display any internet page info.
The Modem has been set up, the connection has been made, but the pages can not be read( We are trying to register with the ISP).

The ISP Help line has no more answers, hours were spent setting up the Dialup networking connection/modem etc.

The restore disk seems to be a hotchpotch of Win 98 files, but I don't think there are computer motherboard drivers etc, otherwise we would just reformat the H.D and do a clean install.

I am at my wits end has anybody got any ideas( Rather than burn the Computer).

I think the computer might well be gummed up with previous networking software, which we have unravelled most of.

Is there a way to do a clean install of just I.E,?
IS there a way of accessing the security features of I.E rather than Tools>options>security?

If none of the above, is there a way of doing a new install of Windows 98 from the C.D, but leaving all the motherboard drivers etc?

( I can reinstall printer/scanner drivers over the top afterwards.

    all the best

    What KIND of computer? Brand?

Most restore disck use the manufacurer's special cab files that contain all of the drivers needed?

Sounds like the best thing to do at this point is use that disk.

Have you tried repairing IE ? Control panel, add/remove programs, highlight IE, click add/remove, select repair. Post back good or bad.

Tony the computer is IBM, there is no recovery disk, the seller seems to have omitted that very important item( Possible the computer is his EX workplace computer removed from a network).

Aleekat, the I.E has been repaired by me in the Add/Remove prog, I have tried all the options e.g Go back to previous version, repair etc).

My research is now leading me to believe that the problem might well be video drivers, or dodgy memory-These are clues I have picked up from this bbs site here.

But As I'm a computer novice, I can't see how these things effect the security tab option of I.E.

also what is the green tick that lives at the bottom of I.E.

    all the best

I dont know about a "green tick ", but at this point I would go to windows update site and download IE from there, and do a reinstall.

Aleekat, that would be great, only problem, they can't get near the net without I.E at the mo, they can't sign up to ISP etc.

This sounds like more than one problem. "Dial Up" is not part of IE, but Windows. Can you get logged on to the ISP without opening IE, by just creating a "new connection ". If not, you could try reinstalling DUN, and then connect, again without opening IE. Post back good or bad.

Allekat, The DUN, Modem and all other bits in the chain have now been checked, they seem to be working, I can get the Handshake symbol showing that connection is good.
It all comes down to explorer now.
Tonight I'm going over to look at poss video Drivers as cause, ( Info picked up from this board.
