Internet Explorer stops with "detecting proxy settings"

I'm using XP home and all of a sudden my IE6 will not access the internet.It gives a message "detecting proxy settings" and then does nothing.Any thoughts?

 

sqig-- "All of a sudden" is a problem. Did you just before install any hard/software?
Usually this happens because you (or an ISP/Network or possibly even spyware) have required the use of proxy settings. See IE Tools|Internet Options|Connections tab|LAN Settings|Proxy Server. If you see that box checked and do not feel you need this setting, uncheck the box.

 

LAN Settings|Proxy Server.

sqig, if you're on dial-up, its the settings in the dial-up section above the LAN panel.
