When I right click an image to save it to my hard disk, the name "untitled" and the file type BMP appears.

The JPG option has disappeared and the original name of the file has gone.

It's only on JPGs. GIFs are fine.

    Any ideas?

If you know the picture isn't a bitmap, but Internet Explorer will only let you save it as one, backup your registry and navigate to:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
For Content Type, it should say "image/jpeg ". If it already says that,
goto Start, Run and type in: regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll

    Hi Barbara-ann,

That didn't work, unfortunately. Do you have any more ideas?

    Thanks for your help.

    Save Picture As... Limitation
    By Neil J. Rubenking

I used to be able to choose either JPEG or Bitmap when I selected Save Picture As... after right-clicking on an image in Internet Explorer. Now my only choice is Bitmap. How can I get back the JPEG option?

The Save Picture As... function will either save an image in the original format or convert the image to a Windows bitmap. If the image is a JPEG, you can choose JPEG or Bitmap. But if the file is stored as a bitmap, you have just one choice: Bitmap. You can convert the saved bitmap file to JPEG using a graphics program.

There's another possible, though less likely, explanation. Under IE5.5, the problem arises if you access the page in question with a username and password that's embedded in the URL and takes the form http://username:password@site/default.htm. Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q260650, titled "Internet Explorer Does Not Save Graphics Files in the Proper Format if Username:password Is Part of the URL," explains this quirk of IE5.5. Microsoft's recommended workaround is to access the site using the unmodified URL (http://site/default.htm) and log on manually.
