    Welcome Charlie

Do you have sp2 installed? IE has a pop up stopper in it with sp2.

I don't use AOL (shudder) anymore. Here is something to try: Connect to AOL, then minimize it and open IE by itself. Do you get the popups then?

Which IE? AOL has it's own version and you have the real one on your computer.

Also which version of AdAware do you have. Do you have Spybot search and destroy?

AdAware se should be version 1.05. Spybot Search and Destroy should be version 1.3.

Did you try minimizing AOL and opening IE from your desktop?

I don't know how AOL works anymore as I haven't used it in over 5 years. Maybe some one here that uses it will chime in with an assist.

Are you sure these are IE popups? Click start>run and type services.msc. In the window that opens scroll to Messenger and double click on it. First, where it says service status, click the stop button. Then, where it says startup type, choose disabled. If it's already disabled, this won't be your problem but often it's a source of popups if not disabled. This setting has no effect on Windows Messenger (instant messaging program). They are two different programs.

The pop ups you just mentioned are sent out by AOL.... The problem you are having was one of the 37 problems I had... although the biggest was an extremely slow speed and constant disconnections.

I asked many times for help (online and voice) and was never given a clear answer how to stop the pop ups. Although I was told at one time "Good Luck "..

Sorry I couldn't be more help...

    pop ups

I found this spyware software www.spyflush.com and it really help out my problem. I have always used spybot but not even it could help with the pop ups I was getting so you might want to look at this software and its free also like spybot.

Others have already alluded to this, but you may not have totally understood: Both Spybot and AdAware periodically come out with new versions. Simply getting their updates does not turn them into the new versions (I learned that the hard way). You have to uninstall and download the latest copies whenever the new versions come out (which has happened a couple of times recently).

Once you have done that, then make sure you go thru the complete process of updating both - repeat the update cycle until they tell you there are no more updates. On Spybot, make sure you immunize - it's a two-step process - if you only do the first step, it is not immunized - the second step is hitting the green '+' sign. If you get a message that "All known bad products are already blocked ", then you know you completed that process. Otherwise, do it again until you get that message.

Then scan again with both. You might check the "Perform full system scan " in AdAware (vs. the default "Perform smart system scan ") before its scan - it just takes a little longer to scan, but is more thorough with that setting.

I've noticed that over time, Spybot has gotten a lot better about being able to delete certain spyware without having to re-scan on reboot, although they still haven't fixed the DSO Exploit problem (minor nuisance).

Thanks - I was getting my downloads from pcworld.com - they still only have 1.3. Downloaded the 1.3.1 from MajorGeeks, and it did indeed get rid of the DSO Exploit thingy. First time it ran, DSO Exploit came up - that would be expected. Second run - no DSO Exploit. The universe is in balance again.
