This weekend, I spent some time doing a non-destructive reinstall of Windows 7 Home Premium (OEM), and things went rather smooth except that IE 10 and/or IE 11 would not install.

The biggest thing that blew my mind, though, was seeing both browser versions offered as optional updates. I always thought *any* version of Internet Explorer was considered an important update.

I followed the advice on this web page, but still had no success. I have since restored 7 from an image until I figure out what to do next...

Did you try just getting updates or did you go looking for IE updates? If I remember right, there are things that need to be totally up to date in Windows before you can update to a newer version of IE.

I installed all important /critical updates before-hand, but even after that, I still couldn't get either browser to install. I even tried stand-alone installers (which downloaded their own prerequisites), but still no go.

For what it's worth, this makes about 6 times (on various machines) that I have done in-place reinstalls, and all of them refused to install IE 10 or IE 11. I'm totally confounded to say the least.

Getting back to the title of the thread, have any of you Windows 7 users ever seen IE 10, or IE 11, offered as an *optional* update? I never have until of late.

Could this be corruption on the part of the operating system to offer it that way?

Thinking about trying the non-destructive reinstallation a third time after doing a clean boot. The last time, I used CCleaner to disable all third-party software from booting, and I even uninstalled Avast.

I read comments where some of you had success with non-destructive reinstalls on OEM machines. Did you upgrade to IE 11 as well?

Why not try a clean install of the OS or Destructive install. Obviously non destructive reinstall is not working.

Good point, LJ, but it takes days (off & on) for me to get everything back the way it used to be. I did have a working image from 2013, before problems developed, but I lost it due to ignorance and operator error. The image I have now works, but it was made after problems started.

I'm not afraid of doing a destructive reinstall - just dreading it. :(

I dread it also. Not only all the service manuals I have saved, but all my reg hack to. That's not including all the programs. A real nuisance to say the least. But sometimes you just have to bite the bullet. I take it you still didn't get IE 10 or 11 to work yet.

The funny part about it, I don't mind wiping other people's PCs clean (except when they have a large amount of personal files) and building things from scratch.

It's different when it's your machine. I think it's just the fact is that now you have to do all that work getting it back to where it was before you had any problems.

    Bump.

Forgot to followup on this thread, but I gave up on fixing IE 11, so I restored from a recent backup image. I may do a destructive reinstall later on, but not for now.

Yes, I saw that link from another thread, but did not try it. The exe is less than 2MB; is there more to the program than that?

You have marked the thread as resolved (?) and neither do I have an answer to your original question about IE being offered as an optional update. There are prerequisite updates to be able to install IE11. If you do the installation on-line, the installer should connect and download the updates. If you plan to run the installer off-line, you have to download and install these updates:

Platform update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1: KB2670838 and also KB2912390, KB3035126, KB3035132, KB3078601 of which some may have been installed but have to be reinstalled after KB2670838.

    Prerequisite updates for IE11 itself: KB2729094, KB2834140, KB2882822

Check your update log if all those updates have been installed.

After installing IE11 you have to reinstall the most recent cumulative update in the correct version (IE11), currently KB3093983.

As far as I know of, I had all prerequisites installed. All of the fixit options/scans I tried confirmed as much.

It's too late to check anyway. I've already reverted back to a previously-created image, and IE 11 is installed and working.
