When I try to perform Windows Updates (IE6), I get the following errors as listed at bottom of this post.

The only thing which I can see that is wrong, is that in MyComputer automatic updates tab, I have automatic updates "set to notify me but do not automatically download or install them." the automatic update service is not started. If I set that to Start, does that mean that I will automatically have anything Microsoft wants to install always done and no longer have a choice? Or is this separate and distinct from my settings in the MyComputer properties tab?

I did not have any difficulty doing this a while ago but now always get this error. I do not want to always have Microsoft download and install automatically.

All other services mentioned here are started.

Thank You and Happy Turkey day for those in the US.

Hi jorjab. Did you set those services to Automatic and set them to a startup type of Started? If those services aren't started you won't be able to install Windows Updates and thats why you are recieving that error message.

    Evan,

I don't have the automatic update services started, see the reason below. The other ones are started and automatic.

See this part of my original questions re the automatic updates service.

I saw that in your post. If you set the Automatic Updates service to Automatic then you will still have a choice of what updates you wish to install. I would set the service to Automatic and then run Windows Update and see if you encounter the same error message.

No, even if you start the automatic update service, Windows Update will still 'respect' the settings you indicate using Automatic Updates settings.

If you leave the automatic update service disabled, Windows won't be able to install updates, even those you download manually.
