    Some background:

Last week I opened the computer and found I could not get online, open several different files and programs, reach or use the restore point(s), in short, it seemed a hiack problem, so I went to the Malware Forum and Broni (patiently) over the course of three days, had me run all the tests and, after checking the various logs, declared things "squeeky cleen" and ready to rumble, but suggested that I wipe all restore points and create a new one, just to be safe.

I followed all the directions and wiped restore and created a new one, but then I went surfing.... and there was a problem.

I normally use FF for surfing and had upgraded (just before all this chazzerai hit) to 17.0.1 and Adobe Flash 11(whatever), the latest releases.

Upon trying to open a youtube file I got a black screen but could head the audio, so I decided to check out the site in IE...and it hung. Not only did IE hang, but everything else hung as well for appx. 30 seconds. After that, FFox and whatever else I had open again became available, but IE sat there and stared at me.

It starts to initalize and look for its homepage (google in this case) but about two seconds into the process it hangs up and that's it. Period.

As an aside, FF seems to have a known problem with Adobe Flash which requires (as one fix) a "dumb-down" to 10.3. In looking at Flash in the Control Panel, I also notice that Active-X is NOT enabled.

Since I can't get IE up and running, I can't (read I don't know if I can) get the version I'm running for you.

So: I'm quite sure I've over-informed as well as under-informed.

I'll be at the computer for the next two days and (if needed) can do as many tests or repairs as are deemed necessary.

OK: Truth be told, all this is REALLY driven by SWMBO, for whom Facebook (and the attached youtubes) are a way of life, not to mention that I made a MAJOR judgement error and got her "Angry Birds ".

She is now in extreme gratification deprivation mode, and it AIN'T pretty.

    m'aidez...m'aidez...:D

(posted from affected computer via FF)

ADDITIONAL: I can modify this message and post it, but nothing else is working at present. Cannot switch to GMAIL or Yahoo Web Mail, Go to Infinity (Comcast) mail...

Now I'm WELL and truly confused!

Even more mystifying: Closed Windows and restarted, and IE came up just like you read about...I'm on it right now... except that when I closed it and tried to re-open IE, the problem occurred again...hangups as described, PLUS every time it restarts, the computer forgets I'm left-handed!! It also give me a message to the effect that my previous browing window did not shut down properly (!!) and asks if I want to return to where I was or to start a new browser. No matter which is selected, IE hangs subsequently.

When was the last time you wiped your whole system & did a fresh install? You're running Windows XP, there was nothing better then a fresh install every 1-3 years (depending on how much 'junk' you'd accumulate).

    Ooooh... Scary!

I was thinking the same thing but the concept of getting all the KB's and SP3 and....

I suppose I'd have to do another full backup but I'm a bit leery... I have three backups and it looks like they're ALL hosed. (Checked before replying)

(Incidentally... what happened to the "spell-checker "? It's not in the usual place under "advanced "!)

At any rate, I'd kinda like to figure out just what happened if possible as it's so bizzarre.
