This morning I opened Internet Explorer and a pop-up informed me that 'Worm.love.a' had been detected by my AVG antispyware. It gave me the option of cleaning and quarantining which I chose. It then told me that I needed to restart my computer to complete the procedure. I did so. Unfortunately, when everything started up again the Internet Explorer icon had disappeared! I couldn't go anywhere on the internet but could still read my emails. My browsing capabilities had disappeared. No matter which icon I clicked on I couldn't get it to function if a browser was required. I then went to my wife's laptop and downloaded Internet Explorer 7 to a disk and re-installed it on my computer. All is well now (I think!), but I'm just wondering what actually happened here. A google search regarding 'worm.love.a' returned nothing apart from one or two Japanese sites. Curious! :(

Unfortunately it didn't. When I opened the newly installed IE7 I got the same message. I chose 'clean and quarantine' again but declined the recommendation to restart the computer. We know what happened before! I find it strange that there's no mention of this so-called worm on the internet. I'll do a scan with my anti-virus program and see what turns up there. I'll report back.

BUT, have you rebooted the machine since all of this to make sure you're not running on borrowed time:eek:

I was thinking exactly that. When the scan is finished I'll reboot and see what happens. Fingers crossed!

Despite deleting the worm through AVG Anti-virus and turning off System Restore, when I re-booted the worm was still there and another one as well - not to mention eleven other files infected. The two items were Worm.lover.a and Worm.brontoc.cu. I decided then to use my backup from Symantec Ghost and all was then restored to normality. I had searched the internet for information about the worm but there was nothing to be had. Strange

Thanks, Mike, but I was referring to 'Worm.lover.a', the original infection. :)

brontoc is from a email called attatchment called keygen, dont open anymore unknown emails as it gets worse, this is why you can only see them. kagen actually means i miss you so much and lover "calls" it in. it disables regedit (type this in on run) and modifys your internet PS turn your firewall back on, it turns it off.

did you get the kagen email?
dont open any .exe files you get via emails, the chance of it being harmfull if you don't know the sender is something like 6 in every 10
