Internet Explorer error message using ME

I have an older laptop that uses Windows ME. As I try to open Internet Explorer, I am given the message "Iexplore has caused an error in <unknown>. Iexplore will now close." I am told to restart computer if this persists. That is great except no matter how many times I restart this continues.
I have tried to install again, yet this same error message pops up. Any solutions or suggestions?

You can try deleting IE (I'm assuming a 5.x IE version) and installing IE6:

Before you do this however, I would use System Restore to create a manual restore point, because if something goes wrong, you would have to re install the OS otherwise.
