Internet Explorer encountered a problem

Hi,
I hope I am posting this in the right location but anyways, I was called upon to see if I can find out why a brand new DELL computer with Windows Xp (Home Edition) periodically displays an error message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close "...

I started out with going into Event Viewer and saw the following:
Warning...Event ID 1517...Source: VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Services)
Error........Event ID 1001...Source: Application Error / Application Hangs
* Info on these Event ID's is difficult to find (even thru Google).

I checked Services.msc to see if I can find a relation to the two problems as mentioned above and at this time see nothing. One of my questions as I search is, may the warning and error messages be the cause for the original error message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close "...Any assistance will be greatly appreciated...Thank you.

In continuation of my search for answers, I came across a step that I forgot to do to help verify the Warning and Errror listings in Event Viewer, and that was to click on the Systems tab to see if any errors are listed there that coincide with what's listed in the Application files...Incase that question should cross any minds while attempting to assist me, I will look at that later today and post back with my findings...

Hi,
I just arrived home from the house with this computer problem and wanted to add the following:

When I checked System in Event Viewer I saw several Warnings refrencing the cdrom and nothing else, all else was listed as Information...So after further conversation with the owner of the computer, there was an admittance to placing their childs CD in the wrong CD tray which leads me to beleive that is why the Warning and Error listings in the Application file ???

To rule out Spyware, etc...PC-cillin Interent Security scan was activated and it detected one threat "SPYW_FPTLBAR.100 "...It was deleted and where Trend Micro said it could be found and removed was not there, so hopefully that takes care of that problem...This particular Spyware was "First Productions Toolbar "...Still not sure if either would be the cause for that error message "Internet Explorer encountered a problem and needs to close "........

To my knowledge the Internet issue was random but always accessible...After yesterday we will most likely have to wait another day or two to see if the random problem has been removed...I will post back...I thank you for your assistance...

P.S...I have not been totally successful on finding a definitive answer on what causes error messages like "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close "...Is that because there are too many possible causes or did I miss something some where...

 

You can narrow this down by disabling Browser add-ons.

IE's tools > manage Add-ons. You can approach it from either end: disable them all and enable one by one or disable one by one.

I contacted the owner today and was advised the "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" problem has re-appeared...As soon as I can make it over to there house, I will then attempt to check and see if disabling and renabling the Add-on's as mentioned allows the offender to be found and removed...I will post back as soon as that mission is accomplished...

Time to Update...I stopped by and checked the Manage Add-On's and the only thing I saw and disabled was "Zango "...Then did a complete Uninstall. I checked Add/Remove nothing there appeared out of the ordinary, and then checked Startup (Msconfig), and all appeared okay there too...However, when I attempted to download SpyBot and AdawareSE it would not complete the initialization due to some problem with a .dll...Computer is only a week old and these problems are premature ??? So who knows what's next but rather than drag this on, I will let this post go and unless something really significant comes up realted to the "Internet Explorer Error message "...Unless of course I hear otherwise...If not I wish to thank those who once again assisted with their expertise...

 

Add Microsoft Windows Defender at least to this box. Update and let it scan thoroughly.

Then:
Start > Run and type in: REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL, hit enter, click OK and reboot. Next, go to IE/Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Reset Web Settings and click apply.

Now run IEFix: http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFIX.htm

That should take care of the problem.

If still no joy, a repair reinstallation of IE is suggested. Normally the process I would follow for re-installing IE would be this way:

Go to Start > Run and type in: rundll32.exe setupapi, InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 C:\windows\inf\ie.inf and hit "Enter ".

Then open IE > Tools > Options > Program tab, and click on "Reset Web Settings" and click "Apply ".

Note: This assumes XP is installed on your "C' partition. If XP is installed on a partition other than "C ", use the correct partition letter when performing this reinstall of IE.

Okay, I will be glad too...It's just bizzare the owner can go any where on the computer, visit any web site, etc but some where along the line up will come the error message...Now I accidently discovered the newest problem when I tried to download the other two programs...It may take a day or two before I can post back with the results but I shall return...Thanks again.

I think I will hold off on the advice of the previous post because before I removed the Zango toolbar yesterday, is when I was unable to download AdawareSE and Spybot...This evening I was able to download both without any .dll errors and as appears well at the moment...I have been able to access web sites with no problems as well without the Internet Explorer error message coming up...Spybot however did detect another possible spyware within called "MyWay.MyBar" which was removed (I hope)...If any problems appear after this evening, I will then do as instructed but for now thought it would be wise to hold off...If it's still wise to do it anyways, please advise, otherwise I will post back in another day or two either way...

Attn: Arie...I think you are right with your suspicions...When I accidently came across Zango toolbar, I was actually concentrating on finding conflicts with third party programs...After downloading Spybot and it found MyWay.MyBar, I am in total agreement with you...I will continue to search for more and post back according to my findings...But in the mean time I want to make sure also that what I was instructed to do is okay to hold off pending no further problems with .dll errors...Assiatance once again appreciated...

 

MyWay.MyBar is a little tough to remove.
You should head to the spyware subforum.

Yes you are correct atleast from what I have read up on so far...It goes to show you that within a short period of time how quick a new computer can become infected...Not a myth simply factual...I will go back and do a few more things to make sure it's gone as well as do as thorough of a cleaning job as I can of these critters and post back in a couple of days...Thank you.
