It has bee nquite some time since I have been on here. Since I installed w98 about 18 months ago, my system has been fairly stable...until now that is.

Norton is reporting a crash every so often with Internet Explorer, generally when I am closing Explorer down. The most common fault reported is with MSHTML.dll and also less frequently MSONSEXT.dll both causing a conflict somewhere. I am currently running Version 5.5. of IE.
I have Zone Alarm installed. Could this be part of the problem? I did think it was MSN Messenger but I have uninstalled that.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Hello RonS
    Welcome to the boards!
How did you go about removing msn messenger? There appears to be an issue with "Remove It ".... See this.
Have you got all your critical updates done?
As for this being zonelarm? It doesn't appear to be your problem at the moment. You could most certainly check though, by turning it off laoding at start up, through msconfig and seeing if it has any affect? Just make sure to go back in and re-enable it after your test?

If by "Norton is reporting a crash ", you mean you are running CrashGuard, uninstall and stop running it.

Crashguard is well known to cause more problems than it fixes.

Then, once it is not in the picture, when you get an error post back the exact working.
Eg: Iexplore caused an invalid page fault in kernel32.dll @ 00028:FEBD1254

Thank you to all of the above. I will look at all answers one by one and take the necessary action. I will be away from the machine for a few days ,so any solution might take a while to post back. I will reply in time though. Thanks again.

I've got to agree with WhitPhil and BillyBob as well. I've seen CrashGuard cause more problems than it ever solved. :(
