   I have updated an XP machine with IE 8 however the Microsoft notice keeps popping up telling me I need to update to IE8. How can I stop it.

   If it is a genuine Windows popup, there's a chance IE8 isn't properly installed.
   
   You could try removing IE8, for details see: How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer as a troubleshooting step?
   
   Then download & reinstall: Windows Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP
