    Hi:
Have read through several postings here to no avail.

I have installed IE7 and when I attempt to start it I get a window which opens and closes right away.

I have run Kaspersky and received clean results. I have tried registering the IEProxy.dll (message states it registered successfully) with no better results.

I have run CCleaner and cleared any registry issues.

I have cleared old system restore points and created a new restore point.

I have the latest version of Java (Version 6 Update 12). Oh yes, running XP Pro w/Service Pack 3. 3GB of memory.

Have tried to open IE7 with no add-ons, same result, window opens and then closes immediately.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Jim

Hi Jim. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Try running WinSock Fix. Also download and run ATF Cleaner.

If those options fail to resolve the problem then click Start< Control Panel< Network and Internet Connections< Internet Options< Advanced tab< Reset button.

Let me know if Internet Explorer starts up correctly after performing the above steps.

    Hi:
Ran WinSock Fix and ran ATF Cleaner. Internet Explorer window opens and then closes immediately.

Clicked Start< Control Panel< Network and Internet Connections< Internet Options< Advanced tab< Reset button.

Internet Explorer window opens and then closes immediately.

    Thanks,
    Jim

Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and remove any programs that you don't use. After thats done try shutting down all programs that are running in the system tray in the taskbar. Maybe one of the programs that is running in the backround is conflicting with Internet Exploter 7. See if IE starts up now.

If it still fails then reboot the computer. As soon as the computer starts up press F8 which will show the advanced boot menu. Select Safe Mode with Networking. After the computer boots in Safe Mode with Networking try starting Internet Explorer from there.

If that also fails read this, How to troubleshoot Internet Explorer 7 issues.

No success. I want to make sure what set this situation in place is clear; I was running IE6 with no issues and downloaded the update to IE7 ( I never had network access/internet connectivity issues. I can ping cnn.com). After the update, the window opens then closes immediately.

    Ok, thanks.

It sounds like you may have had a broken installation of IE7. Do you have any security suites installed like Mcafee or Norton? What firewall are you using? Make sure you allow Internet Explorer as an exception in the firewall.

Did you update to SP3 then install IE7 or did you have IE7 already installed before you applied SP3? Try reinstalling IE7.

Thanks for the link Pete. I should have asked the OP if they installed SP3 before or after they installed IE7.

Since SP3 it is very important to ascertain if the OP is running SP3 as the removal of IE7 is not straightforward anymore .....

    Pete C & Evan:
View the link provided by Pete prior to posting here (a side comment to MS, I like the fact the IE won't start yet they ask you to start IE in the "fix! ").

I do have SP3 installed. That said, SP3 was installed PRIOR to installation of IE7.

Have not tried it yet but I am even willing to install IE8 if I can find a site to download it, burn it to CD and then install.

    Thanks,
    Jim

Since you installed SP3 prior to installing IE7 you can either uninstall IE7 which will revert you back to IE6 or you can try installing IE8 on top of IE7. Either way hopefully you will fix IE and get it working again. If you decide you want to install IE8 then download it from here. As an FYI IE8 is still in Release Candidate stage.

So now that you uninstalled IE7 does IE6 work correctly now? If it works fine then try reinstalling IE7 or installing IE8.

Ok good. You must have had a corrupted install of IE7 which was why it wouldn't start up properly. So whatever you want to do its up to you. You can stay with IE6, update to IE7 again, or install IE8.
